A new trend in math at elementary schools around the country has parents pulling out their hair. Mainly because it is the opposite of how most of today's adults were taught to do simple multiplication in the first place.
According to a Common Core math worksheet that's gone viral, an elementary child today cannot just say, "5 x 3 = 15." Instead they have to change the multiplication problem to addition before solving the equation. However, if the child says, "5 + 5 + 5 = 15," they will still lose points because the problem must be written as it is stated. In this case, "five times three" is really stated as "five groups of three," and has to be written as such: "3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15."
This concept has left many parents shaking their heads and throwing their hands up in despair because they can't figure out what it is that their child is supposed to do. Why do you have to add instead of multiply, and why do you have to add the second number five times instead of the first number three times? The biggest question is: "Does it even matter?"

The idea is as stated above: to level children without the advantage of parents involved in their learning with those who do. Rote learning requires someone forcing children to do something they don’t want to do, but will benefit them in the long run. It also teaches submission to legitimate authority and impulse control.

Nice.
Well, I’m sure that’s the case in part.
They are trying to destroy nationalistic devotion to nation.
The message that all nations are equal suits them. Doesn’t matter that they aren’t.
The Bacalarriot movement in our schools (have seen it in our high schools), where they teach views of our nation from outside fits right in.
It’s very fashionable to the Left to destroy loyalty to our nation.

How is Saxon ‘drill and kill’?
They teach a concept, then they’ve got about half a dozen practice problems for that lesson. The next few problems are from the day prior and so on.
Takes about an hour to do and each practice reinforces the previous lessons.
If my kids really had something down, I’d have them do every other problem or skip the last few because they weren’t necessary.
Memorizing the multiplication tables was fun for my kids. We made a game out of it. Lots of memory devices and some were hilarious. My kids still smile when they’re multiplying and they remember some of the silly stuff we did.
That’s how I did it with three kids, and yes, they caught on so quickly I was astounded.
Right you are!
it how you would say five units of three
let say I have a package (a unit) of candy that has 3 piece of candy in it ...
and I have 5 packages..how many candy's do i have? Its 3+3+3+3+3 aka ..5 units of 3
Or think military.. you have a Squad..that a unit of x number people... and a Platoon is x number of Squads and so on...
I work with computer and syntax is important when doing programing... sounds like then not teaching the why of this

Bad math teachers tend to throw dittoes at the kids instead of teach them multiple approaches to the answer. It’s a tool. Put Saxon in the hands of the right math teacher and it is perfectly OK. In the hands of the wrong math teacher and you’ll kill a kid’s interest in math forever.
Catholic and Christian schools tend to get the runts of the litter in math and science teachers. They heavily rely on Saxon, to the great detriment of their pupils in many cases.
It’s a fairly steady revenue source for tutors.
How would Common Core handle, What is the total cost of 83 items that cost $0.09 each?
The whole school system is now geared for the super slow students. Since "its not fair" to have smart kids be ahead of slow students in their school work, they have dumbed down everything for the slow learners since they have to be mainstreamed now, so the smarties, get the shaft and usually get into trouble or drop out as they are bored to death in public schools anymore.
Gold stars >>> to >>> medicated...
They now medicate our best and brightest because they are so far ahead of the curve, they get restless.
Recesses have been cut way back as I understand it.
Who does that penalize.
Boys are heavily physical centric. They need to go out and blow off steam. Then they can sit down for a while and get back to studying.
This move to a matriarchal society has just about finished off any boy with advanced capabilities.
Medicate the little darlings. Make sure they cry on a regular basis. That will be a big plus in high-school and beyond.
Think of the future of engineering...
They will have buildings that fall down by themselves without the help of Terrorists.
By the time they get to Junior High how are they supposed to answer 12,328 x 1,157?
But your story reminds me of my son in HS.....test time and he turned in his answers....not a paper that showed how he worked the problem out.
Teacher said he cheated......he crossed her with words..he then went to Principles office and was suspended. After he told me the story. I backed him. The only way he could get back in school was to apologize to the teacher.
so after a few days, I told him he really had to get back in school.....so he did. Went into class, stood in front and told the Class he was sorry for his behavior but he would never apologize to the teacher. Back to the Principles again. I still backed him.
All time he kept trying to tell her that he worked the problems in his head.......no need to waste paper or time, and he told her to give him a problem right then and there to prove he that he could do it. Nope, that would make her a liar and humiliate her. Yes, he was that smart.
He graduated with honors......died 5 years later. I still get a chuckle about his confidence and standing up for what he felt was his rights, not what that teacher thought they must be.
I took strong exception to the libcoreholers' taking what was clearly and historically a commutative equation and insisting that it NOW is a "Math Sentence":
In that case, the newbies should develop their own nomenclature / syntax / symbology for indicating math sentence vs "commutative equation-- and not bastardize/pollute/confuse by treating the latter as if it NOW MUST BE the former although the latter has been standardized for centuries!.Their laziness and bastardization attempt is no less offensive to me than their commandeering /stealing the word meaning, bright, colorful and happy as their euphemism for filthy, perverted queer.
Same, da*ned, arrogant, liberal bull$#1+!!!
..and, that's how I'll still feel next year!
