the State Dept. Is this true in practice?

If US ambassadors are indeed the senior US reps in the countries to
which they are posted, do they have unilateral authority over American
military commanders also posted there, and, if not, why not?

No. The President is Commander in Chief, in a military sense, but Ambassadors are not commanders in any military sense.

Technically, even the Secretary of Defense and the various service secretaries are not in a direct chain of command.

The unified and combat command commanders report to the President when it comes to direct, non-autonomous military action or operations.

Yeah the 600 requests for security is a huge issue all of its own.
Seems somewhere along the line, to save money, State was using locals for security.
Guess whose side the locals were on.
It would take a good journalist a long time just to discover who hired whom, and whose side they were on, who did the real financing and on and on,Benghazi is like a sinkhole it never ends.
To imagine that there were never any marine guards leads one to believe that in a way the CIA who was operating nearby,smuggling arms to who knows who,where or why, was really in charge of security.
Someone had to have made sure they didn't interfere with the Benghazi raid.
My guess is those orders could only come from potus—val/jar, CIA head or possibly Hillary.

Obamacare has devolved into a system where most go to medicaid some get very low premiums others very high, all get high deductables and in the end very few doctors even want to take anyone who has obamcare insurance.
Its the perfect tool for medical chaos.

As I recall, Woods and a couple of other 'contractors' at the CIA annex received a call from Ambassador Stevens for help. As they gathered guns and gear to go to the consulate, they were ordered by someone at the annex to "wait". They took this as a "stand down" order. Since they were employees, not military, they ignored the order and went anyway. I don't know who gave this order.
