He has given up his C.S.I. reruns, consuming campaign coverage on Fox News intently but fretfully when he is perched in front of the television in his Houston home.
He reads three print newspapers daily, dials into briefings given by advisers to his son Jebs presidential campaign and stays up late to watch prime-time debates after sitting through the so-called undercard, too.
Former President George Bush, 91 and frail, is straining to understand an election season that has, for his son and the Republican Party, lurched sharply and stunningly off script. And he is often bewildered by what he sees.

More is at stake in this race than Jeb Bushs political career, friends of the family say. The Bush name has been prominent in national politics for three decades, and a rejection of the younger son by the electorate, especially in the primary, could be deeply wounding to a family proud of its role in American history.

I remember when Gary Hart challenged Walter Mondale for the 1984 nomination and was running away with it for awhile until his character defects emerged and overwhelmed the “newness” of his campaign. Rolling Stone, which I ordinarily find revolting, did an interesting piece at the time on how stunned Mondale and his staff were. “I have money, the experienced campaign staff, I have endorsements, I have the DNC committee members’. But like Bush, none of it will matter when you have a candidate who just doesn’t sell and a family dynasty that was only in power in the first place because of President Reagan and the fact that most of us thought we were voting for the Reagan policies. So, Jeb yes “you have endorsements, you (had) money, you have the RNC” but you don’t have the voters that you and your father and brothe openly disdain.
but you dont have the voters that you and your father and brothe hermano openly disdain
“41, Read my lips this time, No More Bushs.”
And, a thousand points of light all blinking “TRUMP”.
I thought he was older than 91. Dang, I’m starting to feel pretty good about what great shape my Dad is in at 89! No sarcasm here....just a little gratitude.
Bush and his son destroyed what Reagan built......screw him
Stay out da Bushes
George H.W. Bush is a one-world-government establishment tool. I hope he dies.
"I've got mine," said Babs.
Well, Bush I is irritated. Can’t abide that. So, let’s just make it up to him by nominating Jeb.
Uh, no thnaks.
Don’t you mean JEB! ;)
Yeah, and they’re PROUD of it! LOL. Unbelievable. Both Bush presidencies were failures. They didn’t do as much damage as Obama of course, but they sure accelerated all the big government crap that set the stage for King Obama.
Good lord — two members of the family to become president, a family in the spotlight and history books forever, continual secret service protection and other goodies for the rest of their lives ...... But, nooooo — they’ve got to have even MOrE!! They want a third me,her of the family to grab the golden ring ...
Seriously?? Enough is enough ... All that has been given to this family with most.y nothing to show for it in return to this country except more mess, more dead American soldiers ...... They can GTH as far as I’m concerned. Greedy and evil sonsofbatches.
Here is a sad thought. The only Republicans who have been elected to the Presidency since Reagan have been a couple of Bushes. Is that what the GOPe wants as a future? Nothing but Bushes to serve as the occasional political punching bag for the Left as the country drifts toward fascism?
That’s Bush I, right?
The one who lied about raising taxes?
Meh!
Ronald Reagan had it right about Bush wing of the Republican party before the 1980 election.
The Bush family at the time threatened to create chaos in the Republican ranks unless Reagan took George as his VP.
I don’t blame Reagan for making a bad move at the time. Most conservatives just did not know how bad the Bush family really was and how they hurt the conservative movement in this Republic.
If Reagan was alive today, then I have NO DOUBT he would be vote for Trump and not Jeb.
12 years? The Bush family has been corrupting American history and American politics since Hitler was a corporal. (not original-I stole that line).
Why?
Because your dynasty is coming to a fiery crashing end?
Interesting read.

“After George W. came out of his long seclusion, who is a the first person he criticizes? Ted Cruz.”
He didn’t score any points with his hit on Cruz. GW either didn’t know the latest news on the polls and the anger out here with the likes of anyone in the GOP, or he didn’t care. Either way, he fixed his brother’s chances... which were low to begin with.
Ronald Reagans biggest mistake.
