Inside a sleek Denver condominium, George W. Bush let a hundred donors to his brother’s campaign in on a secret. Of all the rival Republican candidates, there is one who gets under the former president’s skin, who he views as perhaps Jeb Bush’s most serious rival for the party’s nomination.
It isn’t Donald Trump, whose withering insults have sought to make Jeb pay a political price for his brother’s presidency. It also isn’t Marco Rubio, Jeb’s former understudy who now poses a serious threat to his establishment support.
It’s George W. Bush’s former employee — Ted Cruz.
“I just don’t like the guy,” Bush said Sunday night, according to conversations with more than half a dozen donors who attended the event.
One donor in the room said the former president had been offering mostly anodyne accounts of how the Bush family network views the current campaign and charming off-the-cuff jokes, until he launched into Cruz.
“I was like, ‘Holy shit, did he just say that?’” the donor said. “I remember looking around and seeing that other people were also looking around surprised.”
“The tenor of what he said about the other candidates was really pretty pleasant,” another donor said. “Until he got to Cruz.”
Bush took a harsh view of Cruz’s apparent alliance with Trump, who stood with the senator at a Capitol Hill rally last month in opposition to the Iran deal. While Trump, the current GOP poll leaders, has attacked most of his competitors in the 2016 field, he has avoided criticizing Cruz.
One donor, paraphrasing the former president’s comment in response to a broad question about how he viewed the primary race and the other Republican candidates, said: “He said he found it ‘opportunistic’ that Cruz was sucking up to Trump

George Bush’s opinion on just about everything is worthless to most Americans anyways.
All the Bushes have done and said a lot lately to cause me to reassess some of my opinions of them. Maybe not Barbara, but all the others.
Just one more reason to embrace Cruz.

W just went down several notches in my estimation. It’s getting harder to defend the guy. I’m not to the STFU stage like I am with Jimmuh Carter, but it’s getting there.
Excuse me for my tin foil moment. George Walker Bush never once opened his mouth since the Obama Years, now he speaks against CRUZ. I really only said this among family and here. This only convinces me more that the Bushes and Clintons are two of a kind. Jeb versus Hillary! They did not count on Trump breaking up their love fest. CRUZ is one of a kind that steps up and fights the GOPe and they don’t like it. Truth of the matter,WE know their game plan of BS. Difference is, we got some real Leaders bringing the fight to the sorry GOPe! We’ll come out and end their legacy of lies.
Let’s just remember these are second hand accounts by a Politico “journalist” who is quoting GOP-E types who hate Cruz anyway.
That may sadly be the most honest (but appalling) think W was said in decades. W has a great deceiver. The American people tend to like to elect deceivers. It is “my deceiver over your deceiver” mentality. They think you have to do that to “get elected.” You don’t. It is something you choose, and we the people have chosen it. Time to turn that bus around.
W was a big spending phony who pretended much more conservatism that he believed in. We got what we deserved because most voters were fine with deception so long as they thought it was their opponents being deceived. But a deceiver deceives just as a cheater cheats. Hook up with one and it is only a matter of time until you are the victim.
Time to remember character matters.
Admittedly, I did not read the entire article, but I am questioning the truth of this. Some unnamed individual attending this event, etc.
I just lost any respect I had for Bush. (It was incredibly finite to start with). This backwoods family of murderers needs to get lost. Whoever said this family has class was incorrect.
Or BARACK OBAMA, for heavens sake. GW goes down one peg and I guess that means Ted Cruz goes up another peg.
I do agree with W. on one thing. I just don't like the guy either.
Yeb! was in Texas and I believe in a church (crowd) today campaigning so it looks like Yeb! is going after Cruz voters.
