The FAA announced on Monday that recreational drone operators will be required to register their aircraft.
"There can be no accountability if the person breaking the rules can't be identified," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx during a press conference.
A task force of more than two dozen people will be responsible for creating guidelines for the national registry by November 20, with the goal of instilling the program before the end of the holiday season, when around 1 million drones are expected to be sold.

That’s gonna go about as well as the attempt to license tens of millions of CB radio operators back in the 1970’s.
First they came for the toys.
The national registry will not hinder efforts to create overarching regulations, Foxx said. The registry task force will be made up of representatives from the federal government and the aviation and unmanned aircraft industries.
It will decide which drone owners are exempt from the registry and whether people who already own drones will be forced to register them.
Drone operators will be hit with “penalties” if they fail to register their drones, Foxx said, although it’s not clear what those penalties will be.
Recreational drones? then i don’t have to register as I use them for “educational studies”...
I am a geologist, so maybe I could get one for scientific purposes...are those exempt?
Or about as well as getting VW owners to take their TDI's in for the 'cure.'
“The FAA announced on Monday that recreational drone operators will be required to register their aircraft.”
That would be pretty much any radio controlled air craft and
can easily include any radio controlled vehicle, even cars
and boats.
Merry Christmas Kids and Parents!!
Enjoy the holiday trying to register your new drones.
Next up: GEOCACHING.
Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.
surprised is hasn’t happened already.
The vast majority are normal hobby fliers who have no malicious intent in the drone flying.
There is the punk class, that have malicious intent, looking at girls sunbathing, filming sporting events, flying to get attention.
The last, and smallest class, are the people with criminal intent.
This registration will only affect the first group. It's just like gun registration. I
Does the government REALLY expect this to happen. Not hardly. Absolutely unenforceable
FCC already regulates certain radio-controlled craft. Don’t know why drones wouldn’t fall into that category.
Drone operators will be hit with penalties if they fail to register their drones,

Do drones float? Mine didn’t.
If it moves, regulate it.
This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
You can get toys for less than $50 that you can fly around. They don’t have serial numbers. Millions will be sold this Christmas.
How are you possibly going to register them?
What good would it do?
you completely understand
this is a jobs effort. it’s not about the drones but the paid staff that will be required to do the registration
Fom my cold dead hands!!
