Lindsey Graham Questions the ‘Severed Arm’ of the Massachusetts Flag

In the days after the fatal shooting of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, S.C., in June, Senator Lindsey Graham, the Republican presidential candidate from the state, joined the calls to remove the Confederate battle flag from the State House grounds. Weeks later, it was gone.

And on Thursday, as Mr. Graham was discussing the issue with reporters from The Boston Globe and its spinoff website, Boston.com, he put Massachusetts’s state flag on the hot seat.

“You got an Indian with a – what’s that all about?” Mr. Graham asked, according to Boston.com. “What is that – is the guy holding a severed arm?”

It is actually a free-floating arm holding a sword, floating above a blue shield emblazoned with an Indian.

“I never understood what that was all about,” Mr. Graham said.

Massachusetts’s flag has long raised concerns among Native Americans and some others there. It drew renewed scrutiny amid the Confederate flag debate, including in a Boston Globe column that called it “blindingly archaic,” but efforts to change it have not gained traction.

Minnesota’s state flag, which depicts an Indian with a spear riding a horse past a farmer, was also criticized in the news media this summer.

In June, Gov. Charlie Baker of Massachusetts, a Republican, said, “I would say if there is an interest among the players, and there are many, to have a conversation on the flag, I would certainly be happy to participate in that.”

It’s called a campaign .... the candidates we don’t like, say stuff and we attack them for it, no matter what it is. It’s what campaigning is all about. You seem unclear on this concept. You seem to demand that Trump supporters attack Trump whenever Trump says something that the anti-Trumpers take issue with. That makes zero sense. Why would anyomne ever attack their own chosen candidate?? Again: It’s called a campaign.

Dude, you so missed Lindsay’s point.....he was just taking a little jab at the overly offended yankees who demanded his state remove the Battle Flag.

I mean, he’s Goober, a RINO loser, but he does make a decent tongue in cheek point here.

Yeah, but he's still a faggot.

No, I just wish the Trump supporters were man enough to admit when he steps in it...like Bush and 9-11...like Kelo.....etc. But with very very very few exceptions, they aren’t man enough. Or woman enough.

But your analogy here to Graham is just too absurd for adult conversation. LG, for all his faults, and no one here has actively fought LG anywhere near as much as I have...NO ONE HERE......but damn, at least I can admit LG has a point against the PC police that jumped all over the SC flag. That escaped you somehow.

We lost our Confederate flag flying at Confederate CEMETERIES. Bunch of libs from above the Mason Dixon line (out-of-staters) supported that one. So now you folks “up there” are getting a taste of what it feels like to have an illiterate do-gooder from “outside” start telling you how to live your life and how to change your culture and rewrite your history. Not fun is it?!! I wouldn’t wish Lindsey Graham on anyone, he is a hayseed and an embarrassment to us in SC. But in this case he justly depicts what it is like to have an outsider, that doesn’t understand your history or your culture preaching to you. Again, Not fun is it?!! Lesson learned! Why aren’t you supporting his view...poor Indians with their arms cut off! :-) ...the Confedreate flag was not flying over the sratehouse, it was flying over a gravesite for people who DIED for that flag.

There is also a pine needle on the back of the official flag. It represents that Maine was originally part of the Bay Colony.

Well I for one was not in favor of removing the Confederate flag either. These liberals want to wipe away any history before their precious New Deal, and whitewash any racist democrat history after it, so they can occupy their perceived moral high ground at their various cocktail parties. Lindsey Graham is a liberal enabler and an oligarch, and should be thoroughly ridiculed and rejected.
