After the convention and they are nominated then yes. Before that the candidate has to request it and it has to be approved by Congress.
The establishment Republican and Democrat wouldn’t shed a tear is something were to happen to Trump. Trump needs to hire the best security money can buy and be very leery of the Secret Service. From all the recent scandals of the SS it would appear that once proud agency is suspect at every level of competency.
Were he to win the presidency if I were Trump I would be very hesitant to give up my private security without a total shakeup at Secret Service, some firings and forced retirements are in order there.

Obama got his in May 2007. According to the article, SS consults with leaders of both parties of Congress.
He got it because George W. Bush gave it to him.
