~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Happy 240th Birthday United States Navy!

From everyday small feats to undeniably heroic efforts, the accomplishments and achievements of America’s Navy are vast and significant.

Since its birth on October 13, 1775, the Navy has been involved with more than ten major wars and countless battles in the effort to bring security, democracy and prosperity to the American people and to the international community.

The history of the United States Navy divides into two major periods: the "Old Navy", a small but respected force of sailing ships that was also notable for innovation in the use of ironclads during the American Civil War, and the "New Navy", the result of a modernization effort that began in the 1880s and made it the largest in the world by the 1920s.

The United States Navy recognizes October 13, 1775 as the date of its official establishment, when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution creating the Continental Navy. With the end of the American Revolutionary War, the Continental Navy was disbanded. Under President John Adams threats to American merchant shipping by pirates in the Mediterranean led to the Naval Act of 1794, which created a permanent standing U.S. Navy.

The ships of the Navy participated in a number of conflicts after the end of the Cold War. After diplomatic efforts failed, the Navy was instrumental in the opening phases of the 1991 Gulf War with Iraq; the ships of the navy launched hundreds of Tomahawk II cruise missiles and naval aircraft flew sorties from six carriers in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea. The battleships Missouri and Wisconsin fired their 16-inch guns for the first time since the Korean war on several targets in Kuwait.

Currently comprised of more than 326,054 personnel, today's Navy is equipped to handle operations both on and under the sea, in the air and on the ground. Its reach is worldwide, spanning 100 international ports and touching the farthest corners of the open ocean. Elite groups within the Navy, such as the SEALs and Navy Divers, receive specialized training for advanced warfare situations.

Good to be here.

Before retirement, when I interacted with former military in the IT game who had learned their basic programming in the military, the Navy people stood head and shoulders above the rest. I assume that was the influence of Admiral Grace Hopper.

It was a retired Navy CPO with whom I worked that taught me how to properly eat raw oysters. I owe him a lot for that.

Forty-six years of hard drinking, balls to the wall driving and fast women have taken their toll - but what a ride it's been!

I'll bet that it was a hard decision over the weekend to decide who to favor in the Navy-Notre Dame football game?

Or maybe not.

Well, I found out how Medical Alert works today.

My phone rang just before 1pm....

“We’ve gotten multiple “calls” from the home and cannot make a verbal connection with the owner.” “Now we are calling this number.” Do you want us to call 911 now?”

They called me again asking if they needed to send 911. This was worth the short $400 a year. And Saturday I got the renewal letter and was giving it thought. I will pay it tonight.

No. let me go home and find out what is going on. Called my sister and told her to call my Mom and keep calling until I get home. Mom fell in the office. Couldn’t get up or past Reggie so pushed the button. IT WORKED!!

I called the neighbor, who is an assisted living home caregiver, and he came over and got her up and back into Reggie. I got her to bed with ibuprofen and a heating pad. My sister just texted that she called and Mom is comfy and “really chatty”. When I get home we will see about her getting up and back into Reggie or ?????

AND....the walk in tub will be installed Oct 29 and 30!!! We can’t wait!!

I always pull for Navy in that game - their chances are always slim, but occasionally they pull it off.

I remember a piece about her - I believe it was on that cesspool "Sixty Minutes" - where she handed out strings designating nanoseconds.
