U.S. delivers 50 tons of ammunition to Syria rebel groups

CNN)U.S. military cargo planes gave 50 tons of ammunition to rebel groups overnight in northern Syria, using an air drop of 112 pallets as the first step in the Obama Administration's urgent effort to find new ways to support those groups.

Details of the air mission over Syria were confirmed by a U.S. official not authorized to speak publicly because the details have not yet been formally announced.

C-17s, accompanied by fighter escort aircraft, dropped small arms ammunition and other items like hand grenades in Hasakah province in northern Syria to a coalition of rebels groups vetted by the US, known as the Syrian Arab Coalition.

Indeed.

Now Russia has reason to shoot down US aircraft showing any likelihood of dropping armaments to Russia’s active enemies. In one grand spectacular “conventional” blast, WWIII may officially commence.

It’s not like these rebels, nor the Administration supporting them, would have any means to take and wield power in the unlikely event they _did_ overthrow Assad ... and we certainly don’t want those who do have the means to fill the power vacuum.

I’ll recall again here: The USA eviscerated Saddam’s power structure in a matter of days (hours?) ... then, having no subsequent plan in place, spent the next decade+ trying to fill the ensuing power vacuum (that attempt being a tremendous sacrifice, thrown away by the current Community Organizer sympathetic to the worst of those vying for that power). We have even less plans & resources ready to stabilize a post-Assad Syria - and we can only assume that what is most likely to happen is exactly what our CiC _wants_ to happen, which is in no way what _we_ want to happen.

What kind of ammo? Singer missiles?

Something to fight Russian helicopters and jets?

Moreover, the chance that the Russians will try to intercept such shipments has just increased manifold.

This is insanity — or calculated.

It appears we will be starting a World War to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the follies that led to first World War I...

The headline is actually:

U.S. delivers 50 tons of ammunition to Syria rebel groups

I am assuming anyone who would change the headline like that is probably a big Putin cheerleader. Putin's goal is to keep Assad in power, not destroy ISIS (anytime soon at least). There are no good guys here, but not EVERY organization in Syria is radical (and an enemy).

Further, Putin is trying to re-establish the old Soviet empire as best he can. Reagan used not very nice proxies in Afghanistan to achieve a greater good which was making the USSR retreat from Afghanistan. It was worth doing, just as it was worth siding with very same USSR in WW2 against Nazi Germany. Preventing Russia from destroying what few tolerable opposition groups in Syria exist is also probably worth doing. Sadly, Obama is so incompetent he has mostly failed and also failed to contain former KGB agent Vladimir Putin.

Which ones of the ‘rebel groups’ are our friends?

Which ones would not slit our throats in a heartbeat if an American or Christian happened to be there?

This is total unadulterated crap. If they are “rebels” then so am I. Where is my ammo Obama?

The problem is Assad, bad as he is and bad as Russia wanting him there is, is the least bad option for us re: Syria. Assisting the “rebels” there doesn’t make anything better, as the fall of Assad would make things MUCH worse (starting with rebels’ complete inability to take & wield power, leaving the only options being either ISIS lopping off heads or Russia performing a full invasion; under the current CiC, we wouldn’t do $#!^ to stabilize things there).

It’s not that the headline was changed by a “big Putin cheerleader”, it’s that the headline was changed by someone recognizing that the Syrian “rebels” are far from being our friends, and assisting them will likely touch off WWIII (or completely emasculate us in the world’s view). More that the headline-changer was directing blame toward our dysteemed POTUS.

The only people we should drop ammo and weapons to are the Kurds, but Obozo and even Bush didn’t want to do that because it would offend the Turks.... who don’t give a rats azz about us anyway.

A better question is what will Barry the Pretender do should Russian jets shoot down a couple of our cargo planes

He'd probably roll up in the fetal position and cry VALERIE, VALERIE, VALERIE...............
