Cruz had dual citizenship - he was a natural born American citizen at the time of his birth and could have Canadian citizenship as well if he wanted it. He renounced any connection to Canada some time ago, to make it absolutely clear his only allegiance to a country was where his chosen natural born citizenship is, the United States of America.
