WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new applications for jobless benefits fell more than expected to near a 42-year low last week, pointing to ongoing tightening in the labor market despite the recent slowdown in hiring.
The data released on Thursday provides an upbeat check on the health of the labor market after last week's monthly employment report increased doubts the Federal Reserve would raise interest rates by the end of this year.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 263,000 for the week ended Oct. 3, the Labor Department said.
That was the lowest since mid-July when the number of claims was at its lowest since 1973. Hitting such a historical low is remarkable considering the U.S. workforce has grown considerably since the 1970s.

A doctor has 10 patients. Every year, he kills two. However, after his 5th year, he lost no more patients! What a great doctor!
Let’s see if Reuters-or anyone else for that matter-writes economy related supposed straight news articles in this mode if a conservative is in the White House some day.
Jobless meanwhile, are at a new high.
94,000,000 Americans now don’t work.
Why did you just start a new job?
What happened to your old one?
Oh Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!
Happy days are here again
Obama gave us jobs again
Happy days are here again
Hopefully we are saturated with lazy asshats that dont wanna work for a living. Everyone that still has a job wants to keep it and everyone who doesnt want one is a bum.
More added to the ranks of the 94 million workers who have given up trying to find a job . This news is a disaster not an accomplishment .
Have you lately looked at a not in the labor force chart?
94 million “bums”.
Here in northern NJ we have jobs as well; you can take your pick: Dollar General, Shop-Rite, Wal-Mart. You must be available for all shifts as well.
These McJobs hardly let teen drivers keep gas in their cars (if they can buy a car).
In my area thousands of people will apply for a hundred jobs; it isn’t laziness. Those that can are leaving NJ for greener pastures (and jobs that actually pay more than $9/hour).
Every week I skim this “first time claims” report thread and see all the folks that suggest it deals with people running out of benefits or quitting looking. And every week I force myself not to respond. You would think Freepers would be smarter than this. But every week the same.
Thanks for the simple retort.
It just means they’ve been out of work so long that they have used up their unemployment benefits. The participation rate says that more are not working in the USA than ever. After they give up working for a few weeks, they are not counted as “unemployed” (even if they’re getting an unemployment check), and after 6 months(?), iirc, they use up their unemployment benefits. So, we’re talking about the long term unemployed that the government no longer has to admit exists.
Sally Satchelbottom is sheer genius, Relictele!
No, is because Americans have physiologically changed over the past decade.
Formerly the hardest working people on the planet would now rather sit on their asses than work. They’ve turned into bums.
Geneticists are working hard to figure out why.
We have those jobs here, but they aren’t available/open. The unskilled low-paying service jobs here can’t match the jobs we’ve been losing for decades; they only appeal to foreigners who were living thirty to a room in some hot toilet south of the border. An American couldn’t hope to have a family on those salaries.
Single-home constructions are basically done here; any new construction is either new self-storage units, Laundromats, or occasionally a yuppie hive (designed for people with a good job but no family). This country’s political landscape has polarized between American taxpayers (often with no genetic future/children) and foreigners (with no economic future but with families).
jobless claims has become a fabricated almost meaningless number...
THE REAL STORY IS THE PEOPLE OUT OF THE WORK FORCE WHICH IS ABOUT 94 MILLION...
how does that smell.... not too good right??
besides
unless jobs arebrought back to the USSA we are heading for a RECESSION IN ‘16... and global debt is at a dangerous all time high and if recession hits THERE WILL BE defaults and A MAJOR BANKING CRISIS....AGAIN...!!!
Americo SitonyerAss Man was identified by anthropologists in 2,000,000 AD. This transitional species appeared grouped in the coastal areas of the North American landmass. Artifacts found with fossil remains include surprisingly well preserved plastic listening devices and plastic cards with magnetic strips. Interestingly, none appear to have had a crisis death, but instead seem to have just given up.
I was hired by a marketing company last year to support their work with a soon to be completed partnership with a very large client.
But the deal fell through and all of us brought in were let go. I don’t know if the company will survive. Meanwhile my skill set is somewhat unique and I’ve been doing it a long time,so I found something at the right pay point relatively quickly.
