What difference can around 40 votes make? In the case of who will be the next speaker of the House of Representatives, it turns out, quite a big one.
When the House Freedom Caucus, which consists of around 40 House members, announced Wednesday that it would support Rep. Daniel Webster, R-Fla., that meant the frontrunner, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., would likely fall short of the 218 votes he needed in the full House vote, which had been scheduled for later this month.
So, while 40 votes, give or take, isnt enough to make someone the next speaker of the House, it is enough to ensure someone wont be.
And in this case, that someone is not just McCarthy but, more so, what and who he is seen as representing, namely the Washington and GOP establishment.
McCarthy dropped out of the race because conservative voters and grassroots have had it. They are frustrated with politicians who have made promises and not kept them and they have lost patience with the go along, get along Republican leadership that has done nothing to change the culture in Washington.

I;d take Newt Gingrich right now.... or Condi Rice.
I said Gingrich as well.
McCarthy (45%) had a more conservative rating than Boehner (37%)not much. Chaffetz is 82%.
Please. McCarthy dropped out because he couldn’t keep it in his pocket. Something that would have allowed Obama and Schumer to control him as the need arises.
Not that they necessarily need to blackmail him. More like a “break in case of emergency” plan.
[Condi Rice]
A person who supports dividing Israel and panders to O? No thanks.
I like Tim Huelskamp of Kansas. I don’t know if I spelled his name correctly, but, he is really great.
And Voted for him
I don’t think they’re going to give us a choice. Talking big about bipartisan vote to elect next speaker. Since that means Democrats, our dear establishment is again going to any lengths to keep us out.
This is war and they’ve got the troops, cash, and position. Scary stuff.
That’s what I figured, too. That his fooling around was too recent and fresh on everyone’s mind. These guys wives should uproot and go with them to Washington to keep an eye on them.
Exactly
This is from an interview last year with "OZY", a lefty digital magazine:
Immigration reform will be key to winning former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's support in the 2016 presidential race, putting Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) near the top of the list, she said in an interview published Thursday.
"One of the things I will be looking for [in 2016] is somebody who understands the importance of immigration to this country and the importance of immigration reform," she said in an interview with OZY.
Rice served under President George W. Bush during his push for immigration reform, and has since been vocal about her support for changing the immigration system. She is a member of a bipartisan group urging immigration reform that includes legal status for undocumented immigrants -- one of the most contentious aspects as House Republicans consider whether to move forward with reform.
Immigration is not her only Leftist position.
Count me glad this house cleaning is happening.
Rep. Walter Jones sent out a letter to certain leading Republicans in the House saying the GOP ought not to let those with skeletons in their closets hold leadership positions and right around the letters release, Rep. Kevin McCarthy dropped his bid for the speaker chair being vacated by John Boehner.
With all the voter distrust of Washington felt around the country, Im asking that any candidate for speaker of the House, majority leader and majority whip withdraw himself from the leadership election if there are any misdeeds he has committed since joining Congress that will embarrass himself, the Republican Conference and the House of Representatives if they become public, Jones wrote, the Hill said.
Thank you. And I once thought she was just great. :(
It had nothing to do with the blonde from NC......nothing!
I think a few of us were fooled early on.
Gotta believe some sort of expose about McCarthy and Ellmers was about to drop; their affair is probably the worst-kept secret in Washington. Ellmers needs a primary challenger in the worst way—and not just because she’s reportedly fooling around. She was elected to Congress by promising to fight Obamacare and refuse Congressional health benefits. Just a few days after the election, she announced plan to accept all benefits for lawmakers, including healthcare, saying she “had no other choice.”
But now they’re floating Paul Ryan as “a natural consensus builder” and the leading candidate for the Speaker’s chair.
For Heaven’s sake they really have no idea what the voters are thinking and saying.
Paul Ryan? He has proved himself weaker and dumber than Joe Biden...which is an extraordinary feat for a reasonably healthy human being.
McCarthy was forced to drop out simply because he was doing Renee baby.
