A gun lover who has lost two members of his family to shootings has destroyed his own weapon after the deadly rampage carried out by Chris Harper-Mercer, which left nine dead.
Steve Elliott, from Merced in California, posted an emotional blog post on Facebook about how he had used an angle grinder to break up his handgun and admitted that he was left 'ashamed' it took this latest gun atrocity for him to act.
Elliot, who is in his 50s and who has owned a gun since he was 12-years old, had previously been by his own admission a vocal supporter of the Second Amendment, but has now changed his mind after last week's mass shooting.

Terrible car wreck the other day in my town, so I destroyed my car.
Free TV’s at Steve’s house!
Cool. “When minutes count help is just a few pieces away”
I don’t believe it.
Destroyed his poor defenseless gun? That is indeed the worst sort of gun violence.
My house burned down so I destroyed my fire extinguishers.
So, he ruined his gun, was he afraid the GUN would go out and kill someone? Was he afraid HE might?
+1
I have melted down all of the spoons in my house because ice cream makes me fat. Oh, wait - since I can eat it with my hands, guess THEY’RE the next to go!
I feel for the guy; watching someone lose their grip on reality is no fun for anyone.
Senator Linda Graham could have lent his smart(?) phone grinder!
It’s true. Grief, pain, and fear of pain often cause people to act irrationally.
Well, it was either that, or go on a shooting rampage against semi-black men with substandard social skills...so I guess he chose well!
Also, if Steve is in CA, all handguns have to be registered and the CA DOJ database will show him as owning that gun until he legally sells it, turns it in or reports it stolen.
I would’ve taken it off his hands with no destruction necessary. I’ll take his ammo since he doesn’t need it anymore (unless he comes back to his senses and replaces it).
“I feel for the guy; watching someone lose their grip on reality is no fun for anyone.”
Agreed. I can’t imagine what that must be like. Although if it was me, after the first death of one of my family I would do everything I could to get them a gun and CCW.
My wife is just about ready for one. My son can’t wait to turn 21! Although I’m a bit leery of my son - he’s a really smart college kid, but sometimes he acts more like he’s 16 than 20.
A “gun lover” with only 1 weapon? Gun owner sounds more accurate. Future victim fits as well.
BS. Any "gun lover" will have more than one gun.
Good thing no one he cares about has ever been hurt in an auto accident: he’d need a lot more than an angle grinder to chop up his cars.
Good. If this story was true it would be best for such an emotional dooshnozzle to stay clear of firearms.
