Carl Hiaasen: ‘Pure lunacy’ to jail this man for 20 years
Miami Herald ^ | OCTOBER 3, 2015 | CARL HIAASEN

Posted on 10/05/2015 2:39:45 PM PDT by Forgotten Amendments

The travesty imprisonment of Orville “Lee” Wollard will continue, with the blessing of Gov. Rick Scott. Last week, Scott cast the decisive vote to keep Wollard locked up for firing a warning shot after being attacked in his home by his daughter’s boyfriend. Police said the boyfriend ripped the surgical stitches from Wollard’s abdomen.

The 60-year-old first-time offender has already served about seven years of a mandatory 20-year term. A Polk County jury had convicted him of shooting into a dwelling and aggravated assault with a firearm.

A charge of child abuse was included because the boyfriend of Wollard’s daughter was 17 at the time of the incident, in 2008.

Curiously, the same prosecutor who’d originally offered Wollard a deal of five years’ probation (with no prison time) told the state clemency board on Wednesday that Wollard should stay behind bars after all this time.

Might be the first time I ever agreed with Carl Hiaasen.

This just makes my head hurt. Of course, dumb Republicans like Scott are terrified of being labeled "soft-on-crime" and won't dare tamper with these anti-Constitutional mandatory minimums. This cries out for jury nullification. And tar & feathers for the prosecutor.

NEVER fire a warning shot. Proves that the shooting wasn’t justified.

Another lesson: DON’T FIRE WARNING SHOTS. It’s stupid, it’s irresponsible, it endangers uninvolved bystanders and it can land you in jail.

If the situation has gotten so bad you feel you need to fire a warning shot, it’s bad enough that you should just go straight to putting rounds into your target.

Nah. Scott is a cynical so-and-so who's trying to make the lopsided (due to high rates of black crime) black-white incarceration stats look a little more balanced.

At least to DAs and judges, anyway... Warning shots are stupid anyway.

I was raked over the coals here in the last few weeks for saying Gov Scott was a loser because he appointed the prosecutor Angela whatshername to persecute George Zimmerman

But oh no they said Gov Scott is a good guy, saved Florida or something like that.

So, if he’d killed the kid, he probably would be a free man?

I'll bet the child abuse charge is what did him in. There is so much hysteria about kids/sex, especially in the state that gave us Janet Reno, I'll bet that Scott & the prosectutor didn't want to ever be accused of letting a child abuser loose.

Quite probably yes, under FL self defense laws.

No info whatsoever in the article about how or why the fight started.

Actually - what you want to say to the cops is:

One sentence: "I was afraid for my life, I want to cooperate, I will talk to you as soon as my lawyer is present. And then not another word.

You’re right. I used to love reading Hiaasen’s books, until I found out he was a lib. THIS is a good piece of writing I also agree with.

That said, is there anything we can do? The poor guy - this sentence is cruel and inhuman for what he did.

Effing lawyers trying to make a name for themselves is what these things boil down to.

Any effort anyone can say will help? Write Scott en masse?

Let this be a warning to gun owners. Just shoot to kill. Most felons only server an average of 7 years for murder anyway.

Hill asked clemency officials to keep Wollard in prison because he has “a history of bad decisions” that includes drug use.

Maybe I don't really need to visit Florida again.

Note that according to the article, the ‘child abuse’ charge came about because the boyfriend he threatened was 17. No ‘sex’ involved.

Why on earth would you stop reading books that you enjoyed just because the author was a lib?

It makes no sense.

I don’t support any actor, musician, author or entertainer - or anyone else who would like money from my pocket - if their political bent is directly opposed to fairly Conservative values. Or, if they are just a raging, barking moonbat liberal.

Why in God’s name would anyone help support values that are opposed to their own?

So, no, I don’t partake of many movies, shows, music, etc.

But I DO give Free Republic $25 every month.
