Letter: Put all gun owners in a well-regulated militia
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 10/05/2015 | Robert Hammer

Here's a completely constitutional gun-control measure Congress should consider: Establish a robust national militia, mandating that every gun owner become a member. Failure to register with the militia should result in serious jail time.

In the obvious interest of knowing the quantity and quality of arms available to the militia's purposes, all members should be required to inventory all of their personal arms. Failure to do so should also warrant significant jail time.

This too-clever-by-half proposal would lead to police-state tactics. How would the government know you hadn’t registered without searching your house from top to bottom? And where would you jail the millions of non-compliers? In concentration camps?

Another moron can’t be bothered to understand logic, grammar, or the Heller decision and can’t be bother to find out what 18th century people meant when they said “well regulated”.

Shouldn't the cowardly non gun owners who can't be relied on to be a part of the militia be subject to serious jail time? Fricking militia dodgers.

Hammer would pee himself if every gun owner joined a militia. They already equate “militia” with “extremist right-wing racist nut case”.

With powerful state militias how long would it be before States called the Federal bluff and followed the Declaration of Independence and set up a new Government?

The original militias were state organizations that were mandated by the federal govt. with regard to standards of drill but controlled by the states by means of the state governments appointing the officers. The militia act stated what basic equipment was to be had also . Since the original militia act was superseded by the Dick act of 1903 creating the National Guard & the National unorganized militia ie a manpower pool available to be drafted we already have it.
