U.S., allies demand Russia halt Syria strikes outside IS areas

BEIRUT/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia bombed Syria for a third day on Friday, mainly hitting areas held by rival insurgent groups rather than the Islamic State fighters it said it was targeting and drawing an increasingly angry response from the West.

The U.S.-led coalition that is waging its own air war against Islamic State called on the Russians to halt strikes on targets other than Islamic State.

"We call on the Russian Federation to immediately cease its attacks on the Syrian opposition and civilians and to focus its efforts on fighting ISIL," said the coalition, which includes the United States, major European powers, Arab states and Turkey.

"We express our deep concern with regard to the Russian military build-up in Syria and especially ‎the attacks by the Russian Air Force on Hama, Homs and Idlib since yesterday which led to civilian casualties and did not target Daesh," it said.

ISIL and Daesh are both acronyms for Islamic State, also known as ISIS, which has set up a caliphate across a swathe of eastern Syria and northern Iraq.

In Syria, the group is one of many fighting against Russia's ally, President Bashar al-Assad. Washington and its Western and regional allies say Russia is using it as a pretext to bomb other groups that oppose Assad. Some of these groups have received training and weapons from Assad's foreign enemies, including the United States.

I don’t know what you base this on but I hope you are correct.

US policies under Obama are a cancer in the world.

Are we not backing and propping up the theocratic Iranian regime? Did we not refuse to aid the demonstrators who were pressuring the mullahs? Did we not turn a blind eye when the Iranians shot the protestors down in the streets? Did we not just release 150 billion (beeeellllion) dollars to the mad imams? We’re in BED with Iran. Barky LOVES Iran.

Turkey reportedly equipped some anti-Assad forces with Stinger anti-aircraft missiles a few years ago. Turkey has a license to manufacture some Stinger variants. It's a risk to issue Stingers to anyone in the Middle East but maybe now it's worth that risk. Or on the cloak-and-dagger side the CIA could probably acquire Russian or Chinese air defense man-pads.

Putin isnt going to kowtow to wimpy Muslim lover Obama

Russia in Syria (supposedly) to wipe out ISIS is like the Mafia moving into your neighborhood to remove a dangerous street gang. At first they are very much welcomed. But once the gang is no longer in commission, they will then take over the neighborhood and do the sorts of things mobsters generally do. And that is precisely what Putin and the Russians are: mobsters. They will grow wealthier and stronger and become even more aggressive in their overall expansionist actions. They will move to control the entire Middle East as well as retake Eastern Europe.

Hard to say whats the best course for the US now..obama has screwed up so much in the ME that any efforts on his part will just make matters worse....and the no fly zone is a bad idea.

I think cooler heads will prevail....dont listen to the “arm the rebels” and “no fly zone” crowd.

The Russians collectively laughed at Obama and told the little bitch to sit down and shut up . . . . . and Obama quickly complied . . . asking of Putin, may I please have some more sir.

We are clearly in a serious predicament here with Obama in charge. I suspect he and Putin might even be in cahoots. He (Obama) jumps and and hollers but he won't do anything to stop Russia from taking over any region of the world that they want. In fact, he paved the path for them to do precisely what they're doing with the Obama-Putin Iran deal, missile defense and nuke deals with them (Russia). He's helped make them and the ChiComs much stronger than they were several years ago, and the US much weaker. It's been his plan all along, even before he was elected...

Obama Pledges Cuts in Missile Defense, Space, and Nuclear Weapons Programs

February 29, 2008 :: News
MissileThreat.com

A video has surfaced of Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama talking on his plans for strategic issues such as nuclear weapons and missile defense.

The full text from the video, as released, reads as follows:

Thanks so much for the Caucus4Priorities, for the great work you've been doing. As president, I will end misguided defense policies and stand with Caucus4Priorities in fighting special interests in Washington.

First, I'll stop spending $9 billion a month in Iraq. I'm the only major candidate who opposed this war from the beginning. And as president I will end it.[i.e. not win it]

Second, I will cut tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending.

I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems.

I will not weaponize space.

I will slow our development of future combat systems.

And I will institute an independent "Defense Priorities Board" to ensure that the Quadrennial Defense Review is not used to justify unnecessary spending.

Third, I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons. To seek that goal, I will not develop new nuclear weapons; I will seek a global ban on the production of fissile material; and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off hair-trigger alert, and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals.

You know where I stand. I've fought for open, ethical and accountable government my entire public life. I don't switch positions or make promises that can't be kept. I don't posture on defense policy and I don't take money from federal lobbyists for powerful defense contractors. As president, my sole priority for defense spending will be protecting the American people. Thanks so much.

2008 Pentagon Report (March 2008):
China's Growing Military Space Power

By Leonard David
Special Correspondent, SPACE.com
March 6, 2008

GOLDEN, Colorado — A just-released Pentagon report spotlights a growing U.S. military concern that China is developing a multi- dimensional program to limit or prevent the use of space-based assets by its potential adversaries during times of crisis or conflict.

Furthermore, last year's successful test by China of a direct-ascent, anti-satellite (ASAT) weapon to destroy its own defunct weather satellite, the report adds, underscores that country's expansion from the land, air, and sea dimensions of the traditional battlefield into the space and cyber-space domains.

Although China's commercial space program has utility for non- military research, that capability demonstrates space launch and control know-how that have direct military application. Even the Chang'e 1 — the Chinese lunar probe now circling the Moon — is flagged in the report as showcasing China's ability "to conduct complicated space maneuvers — a capability which has broad implications for military counterspace operations."

Although I agree there is healthy Syrian opposition, in some of those areas there is indeed, Al Nusra.

The Russians have met with “legitimate” or “healthy” Syrian opposition, the opposition is meeting in Kazakhstan presently.

Adding to what I wrote above, I suspect Obama may have been weak and ineffectual on going after ISIS for the deliberate purpose of providing Russia the opportunity to move in and ultimately take over the Middle East. Meanwhile, Obama and Comrade Kerry huff and puff like they’re all upset about it.
