LANSING (WWJ/AP) – Michigan has one of nation’s largest Middle Eastern populations and Gov. Rick Snyder says he “would love to see it grow.”

The governor says Michigan can expect to see more Syrian refugees in the coming months as his administration continues talks with federal officials about the role the state can play in taking more refugees from war-torn Syria and the Middle East.

“The governor thinks it’s an economic plus,” reported WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick. “And to those who fear that the immigrants would take away jobs, the governor says, Michigan has a record of immigrants coming in and actually creating jobs.”

The Republican governor spoke Tuesday to the inaugural meeting of the state Commission on Middle Eastern American Affairs in Lansing. The board works within the Department of Civil Rights to monitor, evaluate and make recommendations to the governor.

If they have Christian family here to vouch for them. There are already far more middle eastern Christians in Michigan than muslims and we want to keep it that way.

As it is, despite FR “Consensus” we aren’t overrun with muslims here. I only live about 70 miles from Detroit and couldn’t tell you the last time I encountered a muslim.

Michigan can only accommodate so many gas stations and party stores........

As a side note, back in the mid 60's there were two Coney Island restaurants next door to each other on Lafayette in downtown Detroit (they're still there). They're owned by Greeks and they were/are famous for importing friends and relatives from Greece, sponsoring them and giving them jobs. Every time you went into one of them they would always have a couple new employees working......

Your statement is partially correct. The only party store and gas station owners in the city of Detroit are the Chaldeans........and yes, they do occasionally get robbed.

However, in the safer suburbs the Chaldeans also own all the stores and gas stations.......LOL!

As a side note, I was talking to one of the Chaldean employees at my local Mobile station and he said his family also owns a gas station in East Jordan and a pizza shop in Boyne Falls........

Speaking of safer suburbs, Dearborn is definitely one of those. Despite the fantasies of some FReepers Dearborn does not have dirt streets with herds of goats wandering freely or being butchered in open air markets. What it does have is a middle to upper middle class population with lots of mid level executives from Ford, Visteon, Lear and a few other companies.

in the article - city leaders in menominee have agreed to fund a mosque/school for Muslim refugees, utilizing one of the many empty unused buildings in the downtown area. Volunteers from the United way will provide care packages and will help refugees adjust to small town America.

One empty building is the old hospital right on US41 near McDonalds. I have not visited the area in years, but the last time I went through there it was pretty desolate. Dearborn, MI is over 9 Hours away, where the large Muslim population is in lower Michigan.

Notice that the UN selects them and the FBI screens and then they are resettled. Regardless of FBI findings, cities chosen for immediate refugee relocation include Bowling green Kentucky, New Bern, North Carolina and Menominee, MI.
