I also believe that Putin's effort to revive the Church in Russia is sincere, and would suggest that he is no longer just another amoral functionary. But, again, I do not pretend to be able to read his mind.

How about his aggressive actions in the Ukraine and elsewhere in Eastern Europe? Or his record of arming and supporting many of America's enemies? His heavy crackdown on opposition voices, including numerous members of the press who have been terminally 'silenced'? Of his 'alleged' poisoning of various other political foes? Of his stating that the breakup of the (mass-murdering communist) Soviet Union was the worst thing that happened in the 20th century? Or that Stalin deserves to have statues in his honor? Are you any good at reading those?
