Jeb Bushs recent comments in South Carolina about Democrats getting black people to vote for them by promising them free stuff during election season is a powerful reminder that a leading Republican presidential candidate is woefully ignorant about contemporary race relations and the history thats shaped the racial-justice struggle.
Ironically, the former governor of Floridas statement echoed Mitt Romneys infamous remarks about the 47 percent of Americans who longed for government handouts, said while discussing minority-voter outreach and the Republican Party.
During an interview with Fox News Sunday, Bush doubled down on his comments. We need to make our case to African-American voters and to all voters that an aspiration message fixing a few complex things will allow people to rise up, explained the Republican presidential hopeful. Thats what people want. They dont want free stuff. That was my point.
Bushs demonization of African Americans as a group whose loyalty to the Democratic Party has been purchased via big-government spending continues the Republican assault on black dignity and citizenship, a struggle marked by contemporary voting-rights battles taking place across the nation.
Black Americans have been the hardest-working and least-rewarded group in American history. African-American rates of employment, income and wealth pale in comparison with those of whites, the result of a long and continuous history of institutional racism that Bush simply ignores.
Racial insensitivity is a Bush family trait. George H.W. Bush, the 41st president, defeated Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis in 1988 by running the infamous Willie Horton ads that played upon national fears of black criminality and racial violence.
George W. Bushs halting response to Hurricane Katrina inspired widespread criticism punctuated by Kanye Wests famous assertion that George Bush doesnt care about black people.
Neither does his younger brother, apparently....

Enough with the fake indignation - With something like 70% of all black households on Foodstamps and some other means-tested Government welfare program, I think its really up to "The Root" to prove Bush's statement is NOT true.
“All the same, Im glad Yeb said it instead of Trump or Cruz.”
I bet it’s a setup, and by tomorrow, both will be asked about it.
People tend to forget that the hurricane hit Mississippi, not Louisiana.
Every race has people who will work hard and those who will rely upon welfare.

Great point.
Fixed it.

No problem, Jeb! will simply apologize for telling the truth.
Really? Then why was their a massive shift in the Black vote from Republican to Democrat right after Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society" government giveaway programs?
Prior to 1964, the Black vote was almost universally Republican. 10 years later, it was overwhelmingly Democrat.
meanwhile....is Trump still polling like 20% among African Americans? I haven’t seen an update on that in awhile, but if that holds....wow. there’s no way he can lose the general election i’d think!
Democrats have taken advantage of the black vote. They could care less about Blacks.
However, Jeb shouldn’t use Blacks as a way to try and score political points either. He can talk about the welfare system as a whole, which is being abused by all races and needs to be overhauled. Remember, they keep saying that Blacks only represent “12%” of the population. Right?
Jeb would never have said that about Hispanics, who has become the “largest minority group,” they say, AND the largest benefactor of welfare system.
And there it is. It is an ugly truth, that everyone gingerly avoids.
And yes, i'm glad it was Jeb spouting it instead of his usual Jebberish. If anyone needs to take some political hits, it is he.
Jeb gets something right
And LBJ said I will have “them” voting democrap for the next 100 years.
I agree, it is demeaning; however it has been proven for over 40 years to be true by the Democrats.
-—Bushs demonization of African Americans as a group-—
But it would be just fine if Jeb demonized whites as a group, or painted all Christians as bad for the actions of a few.
Interesting he could have praised Blacks as a group and the press would be saying ‘bravo!’
Incidentally, Mr. Bush was referring to how Democrats act and plan their politics with respect to blacks, as far as I can tell.
“...hardest working and least rewarded...”
On what planet?
However, Jeb shouldnt use Blacks as a way to try and score political points either. “
Totally agree with that.
This is pathetic.
Jeb knows he’s seen as “not conservative” so he is resorting to idiocy to try to get “conservative points”. As if race baiting had anything to do with conservatism.
Basically Jeb is here playing into the hands of the leftist media’s stereotyping of conservatism. This is really harmful, and it’s wrong, and it’s pathetic, and Jeb should quite the race now.
“Jeb should quite the race now”
