Parole Board Green-Lights Execution of Kelly Gissendaner Despite Pope's Plea
NBC News ^ | 09/29/2015 | Tracy Connor

Georgia's parole board declined Tuesday to commute the death sentence of Kelly Renee Gissendaner— even after Pope Francis called for a halt to her execution.

Gissendaner, who was sentenced to death for the 1997 murder of her husband at the hands of her lover, is set to receive a lethal injection at 7 p.m. ET.

Pope Francis, who called for a ban on the death penalty during his visit to the United States last week, asked the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to spare her life, through a letter written by a local archbishop.

"While not wishing to minimize the gravity of the crime for which Ms. Gissendander has been convicted, and while sympathizing with the victims, I nonetheless implore you, in consideration of the reasons that have been expressed to your board, to commute the sentence to one that would better express both justice and mercy," Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano wrote.

Curiosity is a fickle fiend. I looked....YUK

Did she put on all that weight in the last 17 years?
I’m thinking that the food portions should be reduced in all prisons.
Bye bye Kelly.

If the death penalty weren’t effective, then why do so many of them appeal their sentences?

I understand your frustration at the inequitable application of capital punishment, but that is an issue for your state legislators, not those in Texas, Georgia, or the courts.

Yup, Ma steered her daughter to a cushy, well paying job presiding over the death clinics of PP. Strange that Ma stopped executions while Cecile might as well as have her hands on the vacuum tube!

Democrats are all of the same rotten ilk. I can’t think of any exceptions.

Personally, I think I would prefer the death penalty over live without parole if it were me.

Actually, St. Pope John Paul II, in a formal ceremony in 2000 did just that.

Not that the Inquisition was all bad, despite what you may have heard. Here's a pretty interesting article on the Spanish Inquisition by Thomas Madden. It's actually worth a look.

Here's an insight: when medieval people were suspected (probably by their neighbors) of malicious heresy or other deviltry, the options were the following (1) trial by your medieval lord, who might have a vested interest in a guilty verdict, since he could penalize you by taking your home and property; (2) mob action, in which you might die rather quickly and badly; or (3) the Inquisition (the word means, simply, "Investigation," neither more nor less) in which the Church had actual, well, investigations.

Bottom line: it was a search for evidence, with witnesses, advocates, cross-examinations, etc.: without a doubt the fairest as well as the most lenient courts in Europe. (Gotta see this in context.) The Inquisition practically invented procedural due process.

Madden: "By the 14th century, the Inquisition represented the best legal practices available. Inquisition officials were university-trained specialists in law and theology. The procedures were similar to those used in secular inquisitions (we call them “inquests” today, but it’s the same word).

"The simple fact is that the medieval Inquisition saved uncounted thousands of innocent (and even not-so-innocent) people who would otherwise have been roasted by secular lords or mob rule."

OK, flame on. I mean, let the discussion continue.

It's true.

The counter-argument is the Monty Python sketch.

Which proves that Alinsky was right.

“She requested a last meal of cornbread with a side of buttermilk; two Burger King Whoppers with cheese; two large orders of fries; cherry vanilla ice cream; popcorn; a salad with boiled eggs, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, carrots, cheese and Newman’s Own buttermilk dressing; and lemonade.”

The lyrics from 1972 are not really relevant,
but it is still a good song.

Different states, different laws, different sentences.

In Michigan we have never had a death penalty, reason is that we got one wrong back in the days when we were a territory and executed an innocent.

ME? ... I’d go for:
appetizer:
jalapeno pepper poppers filed w/ cream cheese and some boiled shrimp w/ cocktail sauce

salad:
lettuce wedge with bacon bits, shredded cheddar cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette dressing

entree:
pot roast w/ boiled new potatoes, lima beans, and sliced tomatoes (need mayonnaise), and sweet cornbread

dessert:
home made vanilla ice cream with hershey’s chocolate syrup and crushed pecans
