I used to be in marching band. THE definition of precision was diagonals. If you look at a marching band, you may see the verticals (forward to back) as being evenly spaced, and the horizontals (side to side) as also being evenly spaced.

But the only way to know if BOTH are properly spaced is to look at the band diagonally (use this yardstick next Orange or Rose Parade).

The Marines ALWAYS have perfect diagonals! Even for those of use who practiced what seemed like constantly, we could not come close to those diagonals.
