Will Pope Francis' rhetoric slow conservatives' conversion to Catholicism?
WilliamIII | Sept 27 2015 | WilliamIII

Since the heydey of Pope John Paul II's pontificate, there has been a significant phenomenon in the US of politically and/or culturally conservative people converting to Catholicism.

With the current pope's politically liberal rhetoric, will we see fewer of these conversions?

Also, it's interesting that talking about global warming has proved to be a pretty effective way to get the media to stop focusing on pedophile-coverup scandals. You don't suppose that's part of the strategy, do you?

“I never liked Catholicism because of the centralization of power with one supreme leader”

Yes, sounds too much like how God works in Heaven. Can’t have that.

“If I wasn’t already a Catholic, I would not become one while this Pope is still around.”

So becoming a Catholic has nothing to do with the truth? My friends who became convinced the Catholic faith is true became Catholics. That’s still happening. The faith is still true whether there’s a good pope or a bad one.

“More important question. Will Catholics ever embrace conservatism?”

That’s NOT the question. The question is will the rest of Catholics embrace conservatism. Millions of Catholics have always been conservatives.

I seriously have to rethink my participation here.

In the past I'd taken about a two, two and a half year break from FR and all the other "political" forums that I'd been participating in.

When I came back to FR, I literally didn't recognize the place. The "tone" of FR, the posts here, the "quality" of the posts were just way down IMO and what made it worse for me was the seemingly endless game of "gotcha!" that some posters pull on others. (I admit that I got caught up in some of that myself until pulling my self back from it.)

I think you've been around almost as long as I have (class of '98 here) and we've seen alot of change on here, some certainly not for the better. Before you pull the plug, consider taking a few weeks off first and not think about what goes on here. Give yourself at least a few weeks, maybe thirty days to do absolutely nothing on FR. Don't read it, nothing. Whenever you're ready to re-think your participation after a break you'll know what you want to do.

Wishing you the best.

“The Catholic Church’s mission is to lead people to God and eternal life with Him.”

With this pope leading the parade, there will be a lot more people meeting God a lot sooner than they had hoped. Death and mayhem by the millions follows wherever leaders with a significant following preach Marxism.

Can the world survive the twin Marxists - the pope and Obama at the same time without sending millions to their untimely death?

I hope so.

In This Video from 1979 you'll see Pope John Paul II's visit and open air mass from Chicago's Grant Park.

Somewhere around 2.5 MILLION CATHOLICS crammed into Grant Park on the day Pope John Paul II came to Chicago.

Never seen anything like that before, and I lived in the Chicago area when Pope John Paul II came here. (I was also still a practicing Catholic.)

Want to see the Catholic Church turn-around? Find another Pope John Paul II. He was BELOVED by all, even when he spoke truth to power.

The Catholic Church’s mission is to lead people to God and eternal life with Him.

That’s certainly where we should all try to be headed, thanks.

This pope’s left-wing enthusiasm for doing his so-called good with other people’s money......................................................Agreed....generosity does not mean taking money from person A under force of law (taxes) and giving it to person B.

No, his personal beliefs have nothing to do with anything...he will be just fine and once he sees countries like toe U.S. his views will slowly change to a more realistic point of view. He is from, and was raised in a predominantly socialiist country.

If these people had any sense, then they wont be at Mass tomorrow, and wont come back. Lots of people centuries ago did just that.

Yeah, look where it got them.....sheesh.

I never liked Catholicism because of the centralization of power with one supreme leader

It is a VERY large, worldwide organization....it has 1 leader because its members want it that way and it is, after all, governed so that its followers are fairly consistent in their beliefs and procedures. A Mass in New York, Milwaukee, SanFrancisco, London, Tokyo, Shanghai are pretty much the same...

I left the Catholic Church some years ago, but when I was sick, I thought about going back. Glad I didn’t.

Any time will do, and we'll welcome you back to reality!!!

All of this nonsense makes me wonder not why I’m a Catholic but why I’m a member of Free Republic? What is the point? It is only for born-agains. I’m tired of the hate. And, yes, I know: I won’t let the door hit me.

You have to be kidding....this is more fun than a human being should be allowed to have.....watching people try their best to defend the indefensible, try to excuse their extremely poor decisions over the years, try to explain away direct Biblical admonitions "THIS IS MY BODY" is fascinating!!!

No hate. As an ex-Catholic I wish it was the true church, but it's not.

Sure it is, your denial and inability to accept the truth changes nothing....it is the same today, yesterday, and tomorrow

I hate this pope, not because he’s Catholic, and not just because he’s a commie - but because he is preaching lies and misery to you and your fellow Catholics - and doing what may be irreparable harm to your religion.

Oh good grief.....the Pope is just fine and he is changing NOTHING in the church...as a man, I think his political views are a little too liberal, but they are just his views....no big deal and no one needs to pay attention to them. He seems ultra-popular and draws very large crowds.

If these people had any sense, then they wont be at Mass tomorrow, and wont come back.

Why would I do that? You think that because Pope Francis is a SJW that's going to cause me to doubt the Truth of the Holy Eucharist? I think not.

My theological views are not informed by my political views.

I seriously have to rethink my participation here.

Many Catholics are doing likewise. And many have left, taking their donations with them.

Pope John Paul II was ridiculed daily on FR. I know because I was reading FR at the time.
