In Carly Fiorina's telling, the only times she's been in Washington have been when she's fighting it.
Standing in a jam-packed open-air smoke shed here outside Columbia on Wednesday, the surging Republican presidential candidate once again blasted the "professional political class" and the lawyers, lobbyists and special interests that cater to it. Her stump speech highlights her private sector career -- starting as a secretary and ending up as the chief executive of Hewlett-Packard -- that voters here rave makes her an appealing candidate in this season of outsiders.
But what Fiorina rarely mentions are her ties to that same establishment that she now castigates. A resident of Mason Neck, Virginia, just over 20 miles from the White House, Fiorina has served as a high-powered fundraiser and adviser to the Republican Party's more moderate big-money machine over the past decade.
That resume may conflict with her outsider message, but her voice is still welcome to voters seeking change.
"Everyone wants someone that's not a Bush or Clinton. But she's a breath of fresh air," said Shelli Simontacchi, a 43-year-old paralegal who came to hear her in the city of Rock Hill and is excited about voting for a strong woman. "I don't consider her old Washington money."
Interviews with two dozen voters here reveal that few supporters are aware of her career beyond HP -- and only some said they felt it undermined her pitch as a genuine outsider. But as Fiorina races to frame her story in the wake of a breakout debate performance, she very well could be tested by curious voters about how to square those years with her fiery anti-Washington rhetoric.
"She's a sort of insider's oustider," influential conservative writer Ramesh Ponnuru told CNN. "To the extent that there is any plausibility

Did they mail one to Trump ?
: )
She would like everyone to believe she is not a Cheap Labor Express candidate, but she is.
She actually wasn’t much of an insider. For one thing, the GOPe doesn’t really like business people and for another, it doesn’t really like women. Especially smart ones.

First of all=SURGING???????????????? bleeding is more like it..ops...forgot Trump got in trouble over that....
Second of all= the ‘professional political class’ and the lawyers, lobbyists and special interests that cater to it are the groups of people that are giving her money to blab her mouth 24-7....
Sorry, but she isn’t Donald Trump and doesn’t have billions of dollar to support her own campaign!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t like Barbara Boxer, but it’s time for another hit piece from her on Miss. Snarly!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trump should find that lady that raised hell about Fiorina during the NH townhall. She said she worked at Lucent when Fiorina was CEO and lost everything, which included a half million dollars in her retirement fund. She was layed off after 37 years with absolutely nothing to show for all those years working. Would love to see her used on the campaign trail or in a good campaign ad featuring her and others who had their lives destroyed by Fiorina’s mismanagement.
That is why they like her. She is a failure with a smart mouth.
Wool Hooo! She’s an insider....she lives within 20 miles of the White House!
That proves it!
What a bunch of tripe!
And nothing there about being fired by McCain for saying Sarah Palin couldn’t run a business nor cold McCain...unless I missed it, nothing about buying a failing Compaq against the entire board, or being fired by unanimous vote by the same board, killing their stock, bringing the company to its knees...nothing about Lucent...
Leave it to CNN to leave out half the story...
Still it does point out that Carly is not the outsider she pretends to be. I just hope everybody else realizes that.
LOL. You’re on FIRE tonight!
I sure hope you’re getting paid for all this.
I remember when FioRINO got the hook by the McCain campaign and they sent her to Siberia. It would be funny if Trump brought it up again.
Having read most of that report (a lot of it is repetitive), about 98% of it is typical Dem / Lib envy / class warfare tripe. In some cases, Fiorina’s past views (as quoted in the report) actually make quite a bit of sense.
However, the other 2% or so is pretty damaging to her.
