Donald Trump is in an all-out attack against a surging new rival — and he just fired back

Real-estate developer Donald Trump is now frequently attacking a presidential rival he mostly refrained from criticizing in the past: Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida).

During a Thursday morning CNN interview, Trump hit Rubio as a "kid" in a wide-ranging critique.

He first bashed Rubio's credibility as a foreign-policy wonk when asked to compare their knowledge about Syria.

"Marco Rubio sits behind a desk sometimes and he reads stuff," Trump said, according to CNN's transcript. "That's all he does. I create jobs all day long. I'll know more about all of this than all of them put together and believe me, we'll have a winning strategy. If Marco Rubio is good, how come we're doing so badly?"

Trump went on to dismiss the 44-year-old senator's age.

"These guys don't know how to win," he said. "Marco Rubio, he's like a kid. He shouldn't even be running in this race, as far as I'm concerned. He's a kid."

Later in the interview, Trump again called Rubio a "kid" and criticized him for not deferring his candidacy to Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor.

"He's a kid. He has no right — I mean, frankly, he was very disloyal to Bush," Trump said. "Bush was his mentor. And everyone said he'd never run because Bush was his mentor. Well, the fact that Bush was his mentor didn't stop this young guy who is overly ambitious from wanting to run. Now Bush looks foolish and he looks like he's a very disloyal guy, frankly."

Earlier in the day during a "Morning Joe" interview, Trump also mocked Rubio for perspiring during last week's presidential debate.

Actually he as offered more specifics than any of the other candidates. You just refuse to listen or acknowledge.

I haven't heard him do that in the first two debates or in the several interviews I have heard him speak or have read his quotes. When did he do this knowledgeable, in-depth, substantial speaking on the issues?

Good point! It appears Trump is making sure he defines himself in every way and not by politicians or the media.

Like him being on the offensive regarding policies. However he doesn't need to make it personal. Will make him look mean spirited there. Ultimately he needs to be like-able. Mean spirited costs like-ability.

Beat Fiorina on like-ability.

Like-able is part of why Carson was doing well.

Rand Paul might be able to tap into like-ability if he tried harder to.

People are going to have to like and be comfortable with who they vote for.

If we wanted vindictive we could vote for Hillary.

He’s repented and told us why, and you can choose to believe him on that or not. But I’m not sure how people can hold those types of things against Rubio and then ignore Trump’s past on abortion, gun rights, drugs, etc?

Good point. Rubio has a much better record of being conservative, on a range of issues, than does Trump.

Tea party started in 2009.

Rubio was elected in 2010.

GOP has hated the Tea Party since its inception.

The tactic used by leftists is to infiltrate and destroy from within.

The GOP is comprised of leftists.

Exactly right. Just what the hell has this twerp done in his life to merit consideration for the Presidency, besides talk about his Cuban grandparents and what they had to do to make ends meet living in Marialito Meeyammi? I smell LaRaza.

Not quite. Trump counter punches both in a personal way and also on the opponent’s record. Rubio is an inexperienced Senator with little accomplishment as Trump said.

A vote in the Senate on Syria. Guess Senator Rubio thinks that will defeat ISIS. That’s all these politicians do is vote. Trump builds things and creates jobs.

And Rubio does seem like a child among adults on the stage. Whatever his physical age. Maybe in 8-16 years he will seem presidential.

So far he has offered specifics on dealing with the illegal alien invasion and his thoughts on the 2nd Amendment.

He isn’t conservative on anything.

He hasn’t advanced one single thing from any conservative agenda, much like the GOP, which also isn’t conservative.

I understand a lot of Trump supporters would rather he focus more on the issues, but there’s a method to Trump’s madness. There will be time to be more presidential later, but right now Trump knows that if he doesn’t win the nomination then none of it matters. You may find it distasteful, and I respect that, but Trump knows what he’s doing. He’s getting under their skin with personal insults that have a ring of truth. The youthful jab at Rubio wouldn’t have the same effect on someone like Cruz, because Cruz is obviously a serious thinker. But with Rubio, there’s some truth to it. Same with the ‘low energy’ characterization of JEB.

No. I never felt that way about Trump.

But I wouldn't come to you for advice on who I should trust. I have just Trump's past statements to go on. I can't trust the guy based on those and not just feelings.

Rubio is out of his league here. Maybe his last presidential run. And so young.
