CNN: Ted Cruz and Stephen Colbert debate Reagan, gay marriage
CNN ^ | Tue September 22, 2015 | David Wright

---

The two continued the debate, with Cruz contending that "Ronald Reagan also signed the largest tax cut in history" and Colbert returning, "But when conditions changed in the country, he reversed his world's largest tax cut and raised taxes when revenues did not match the expectations."

...Colbert added, before ... and joking, "Would you believe that it's important not to call the other side the devil?"

Cruz agreed, saying "When others attack me, I make a point on keeping the focus on substance." He went on, "What I am fighting for are simple principles -- live within our means, stop bankrupting our kids and grandkids, follow the Constitution."

Colbert seized on Cruz's statement, quipping "And no gay marriage."

With that, the debate turned to the constitutionality of the Supreme Court's ruling in favor of gay marriage rights. Cruz argued "Under the Constitution, marriage is a question for the states, if you want to change the marriage law." He pointed to the 10th Amendment, which enshrines the principle of federalism whereby states make laws concerning questions and powers not addressed in the Constitution.

Colbert, however, pressed Cruz, saying "I'm asking what you want."

Cruz replied, "I believe in democracy. I believe in democracy and I don't think we should --," before he was cut off by boos from the disapproving audience. But "The Late Show" host unexpectedly reprimanded the crowd, insisting "No, no, guys, guys, however you feel, he's my guest, so please don't boo him."

Cruz wrapped up his argument by criticizing the Supreme Court, saying "I don't think we should entrust governing our society to five unelected lawyers in Washington." He added, "If you want to win an issue, go to the ballot box and win at the ballot box. That's the way the Constitution was designed."

He’s a snivveling twit.
Unfortunately about 5 million folks (mostly millenials) watch him every night and consider him “newsworthy”.

Some other idiot queer in a long line of idiot queers who dominate the TV shows and media these days. Legions of people are dumping pay TV organizations because they reject horsesh!t losers like Stephen Colbett and Jonathan Leibowitz.

I clicked the link hoping to hear some intelligent discourse but instead lost IQ points listening to some partisan idiot calling himself a professor.

Colbert has been appointed the voice of conscience for Amoral America. Since almost nobody goes to church anymore, self-described churchgoers like Colbert (and John Kasich) can reassure them that they’d still hold the very same beliefs even if they hit the pews now and again.

...

He was actively campaigning against Cruz. Too bad I don’t watch his show so I can boycott it.

The left is reflexively calling it a win but Cruz got them to cheer what they booed 20 seconds earlier.

I was really wish Cruz had countered Colbert's examples of TEFRA and the Immigration Reform Act of 86 as Reagan 'working across the aisle' by pointing out that in BOTH cases the democrats reneged on their promises.

They never delivered the promised $2 in spending cuts for every $1 in raised taxes, and they NEVER secured the border.

I understand why he wants to keep it positive but sometimes you just have to shut the liars up.

We’re at war.

I’m missing the part about there needing to be anything positive other than winning.

If you’ve paid money to sit through Colbert, then that likely signifies the end of all critical brain functions.

Cruz schooled Colbert like he’s going to school Hillary Clinton or God forbid Bernie Sanders.

“So it is a matter of compromising,” Colbert added, before asking again about compromise and joking, “Would you believe that it’s important not to call the other side the devil?”

That’s what Obama has been doing the past 7 years. Every speech, he had something negative to say about Republicans.

I think that’s why so many of us admire Trump.
Ideologically impure, but the Phalanx Weapons System of politicians.

Before the interview, I thought I would try to watch the whole show from the monologue to Ted's interview.

And then, Clobbered mentioned the words "eating" and "genitals" in the same sentence.

He thinks that kind of stuff is funny.

He is a complete @$$.

I like Cruz very much but he needs to take a page from Trump’s playbook and start kicking ass.

I didn’t mean that to be limited to Cruz. Our guys seem inclined to bend over backwards every time something is blown out of shape by the media.

I’m glad Trump and some others are finally telling the media and others to put a sock in it.

In this case its the tactic of using a lie as a context for a question.

For heavens sake instead of trying to honestly answer the question reject it's untrue premise.

See, this is why I love Cruz. He knows what he believes and why. He focuses on the ideas, the principles, not the personalitues of those who disagree.

No, he’s not above reproach, he’s human.
