And the fines for VW, per car, were about $35K. More than the price of the car.
Meanwhile, I have one. Works fine. Don’t want it ruined.
I could dribble a gallon of diesel out over 45 miles, to evaporate into the air, and no one would ever know it. Not even the vapor-sensitive Polar Bear.
VW Is Said to Cheat on Diesel Emissions; U.S. to Order Big Recall

Duh! As soon as VW’s independent and free workers humble themselves to the UAW this issue will fade away.
I don’t have a problem with it. Our emission standards are so much higher than Europe’s because of the CA emission standards. Just another way the EPA limits our lives.
I wanted a diesel Subaru, but I cannot get it in the States because it only meets Euro standards, which quite frankly are good enough for me. As long as I live on a globe with China, Russia and many other polluting counties I do not want to be hampered with over zealous leftist bruhaa
“I got to give them credit for having the cohones to think they’d get away with it and or no one would check.”
Or get away with it without paying the appropriate bribes. Those bribes may be paying homage to the alter of man made global warming or endorsing Agenda 21 or actually paying money to some organization.
Liberals hate diesels. Jimmah Carter tried to kill them back in his day too. I remember that many manufacturers started offering diesel options for their cars because gas was scarce and diesel fuel was cheap and plentiful. Suddenly there was a new tax on diesel that ran the price of diesel way up above the price of gasoline.
I hear you. NOx is not much of a problem outside of Los Angeles, but it certainly is in Los Angeles. Seems that prohibiting the highly-polluting vehicle in Los Angeles could make some sense.
The bigger problem when this crap happens is that the regulators can go to other companies that are having trouble complying and essentially say: “Well VW can do it, what’s your problem?”. Say what you will about the standards, but at a minimum they have to be enforced equally on all players.
They are great engines. I have an older Golf TDI with 335,000 miles on it. I drive it a hundred miles a day.
There’s a train station next to where I work. In calm weather the there is a train parked there in the morning spewing God awful diesel fumes. My TDI doesn’t pollute one twentieth as bad. But, they’re going after VW.

_____________
No more enforcement. Tired of it.
Your problem is that you expect goverment edicts/mandates to also make sense.
BMW, Mercedes and GM all have 2.0 liter diesels, similar to the VW Group engine.
They all meet the same pollution standards, during the same time frame, claim the same fuel mileage as does VW Group.
Presumably it is possible to simply fix the VWs and Audis.
I intend to watch this closely, since I recently bought a 2013 VW TDI, certified pre-owned. My expectation based on advertising, is to enjoy years of high mileage usage.
I took a different approach. A diesel Rabbit with about 270k on the odometer. MN road salt killed it. It got to the point that when I pulled out the headlight switch the windshield wipers would activate. Under-the-hood corrosion in the electrical system connector blocks...
I pulled the engine and gave the rest away. The engine still lives - sitting on a wheeled pallet driving a hydraulic pump so it is a general-purpose power supply for a log splitter/cement mixer/high-pressure sprayer/you-name-it.
Besides the hand-crank windows it also had a hand-crank sunroof.
There will be several world-class geeks that will rise to the challenge.
I just love to play on the CAN Bus...lol :-)
I'm a Yuuuge fan of hand-crank windows!
I was thinking about that too - there may well be a lot of people trying to get their OEM software back.
No need to go back OEM. Go with a Malone, Rocketchip or Kerma tune. They can make these little engines make power and increase fuel economy.
My little brother decided he knew it all and went and tore into the sunroof, screwed up the works, and then could not secure it.
I needed to borrow the car to move some things from home while I was getting the heads worked on my '64 Skylark...
Here is the Rabbit... with a piece of clothesline tied to the structure of the sunroof (the velour interior panel was gone), and the headrest on the passenger seat. I had no time to correct dipshit's eff up, so loaded the car and went.
10 miles later, on the interstate, BLOOP! there goes the sunroof, out of the car... but recall the rope? It proceeded to fly about violently at 55MPH denting the roof all to hell. I was lucky it hadn't smashed out all the glass.
To this day, my brother has the same mechanical aptitude... I cringe at the timing belt change he is about to undertake on his '88 Scirocco.
LOL, if I had one, I would.
