France's famous Eiffel Tower, one of the world's most visited attractions, was closed after a man carrying a rucksack was seen climbing the tower.
The alarm was quickly raised early on Sunday and the area was evacuated while anti-terror police carried out a search of the iconic landmark. Police said that so far they have been unable to find the man. France is on the highest state of alert following a spate of terror attacks this year.
The Eiffel Tower, which receives as many as 30,000 daily visitors, has been the target of plots by Islamist extremists in the past.
But police said there may be another explanation for Sunday's security breach - the man may have been a parachutist hoping to perform a jump.

I remember watching our foreign correspondents walking along side these *poor refugees* trying to portray the saddest story, when all of this came to light. I knew then that these healthy, well clothed young men, and these *stories* were nothing more than a ruse, to fool the masses.
I’ve not heard much about these *refugees* entering France. Do you suppose this is because they are not trying to reach France, or that it is just not being reported?
Yeah the France thing is quiet. Two months ago it was all about the Sub-Saharan African savages at Calais.
Did you see the shameful BBC “reporter” following hundreds of the “refugees” trekking through the cornfield in Croatia? There he was chatting with them, and rambling on about how hot it was and oh dear they’d been walking for hours and those brutes the Hungarians had manhandled them.
