HOUSTON, Texas Today, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, continuing to build a strong, national organization announced the beginnings of his Nevada Leadership Team, which consists of conservative grassroots leaders, faith and values leaders and elected officials. Nevada currently is the fourth GOP presidential contest on the calendar and is the first in the West. Republicans in Nevada will caucus on Tuesday, February 23, 2016.
I am excited to have the support of such a terrific group of courageous conservatives in the State of Nevada, said Sen. Cruz. Each day, we continue to build our team of activists, volunteers and supporters in the Silver State and strengthen our grassroots organization in order to compete and win Nevada.
Nevadans are looking for someone who is willing to stand up and lead,” Cruz for President Nevada State Director Robert Uithoven said. “They have grown tired of candidates who campaign as conservatives and then give in to the Washington Cartel. Ex-Congressman Jim Santini, conservative democrat who switched and ran against Harry Reid in 1986 passed away a couple weeks ago. Write-up by John Gizzi.

Had Santini deposed Howard Cannon in the ‘82 primary, he might’ve prevailed over Chic Hecht. The question is if and when he would’ve switched parties while in the Senate. He would’ve been at risk regardless. If he had stayed a Dem, he’d have lost renomination to Gov. Dick Bryan. Had he switched, he still might’ve lost to Bryan as Hecht did.
The opportunism claim hung around his neck like an albatross when Laxalt retired. It’s too bad Laxalt retired at all, he could conceivably still be serving today, or waited until 1998 or 2004 (when he’d have been 81) to have stepped down, anything to have denied Reid a seat.
RIP to Jim Santini, one of the more interesting figures from Nevada. The Nevada he lived in is no more.
Well that's a dumb shame, he was clearly too conservative to stay a rat.
