When the Nobel committee awarded President Obama the Peace Prize just eight and a half months after he stepped foot in the Oval Office, many people were left scratching their heads. After all, what, exactly, had this community organizer-turned-president done yet to deserve a prize shared by the likes of Mother Theresa? Well, even the committee acknowledged at the time they werent giving it to him for accomplishments already made, but those hoped for.
And now, according to a new memoir by the former director of Norways Nobel Institute, the committee believes it may have made a mistake.
[We] thought it would strengthen Obama and it didnt have this effect, Geil Lundestad told the Associated Press in an interview.
Lundestad, who stepped down last year after 25 years as the non-voting secretary of the secretive committee, noted that Obama was startled by the award and that his staff even investigated whether other winners had skipped the prize ceremony in Oslo.
That has happened only on rare occasions, such as when dissidents were held back by their governments.
"In the White House they quickly realized that they needed to travel to Oslo," Lundestad wrote.
"Even many of Obama's supporters believed that the prize was a mistake," Lundestad wrote in excerpts of the book, the AP reports. "In that sense the committee didn't achieve what it had hoped for."
Lundestads book offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the committee whose decision-making process is typically shrouded in secrecy.
You could knock me over with a feather.
I read back then that he was nominated 3 weeks before he took office. Idiots.
Why don't they revoke it then?
And in other news, water is still wet.
The racist Nobel Prize committee is just trying to muddy the waters. Everyone knows that Obama should have been awarded the Peace Prize the very first day he was in office. There was no need to wait for any fancy pre-determined ceremonial date.
well wait, his past accomplishments included slackery, lying about his background, deceiving the public about who he really was, voting “present”, and playing golf. If they gave him the award in hopes he would continue and do even more - they should be delighted with how things have turned out.
He was awarded it because he was elected. Nothing more.
The utter world-wide love-trance that the MSM and the various elites were experiencing back in late 2008 and through most of 2009 was unbelievable. I've never seen anything like it. It was dismaying and a little bit frightening.
IIRC, they announced the award just a few weeks after he took office. It just took them a while to get around to the actual ceremony.
can they take it back?
DUH...
Ya’ Think????
As long as everyone else here is yawning, I think I’ll join in. Some other Nobel Peace Prize winners:
Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, Yaaser Arafat, Mikhail Gorbachev.
i dunno, the peace prize for the guy who single handedly caused conglagurations in dozens of countries with millions of refugees? The guy who is hell bent and determined to wash the entire middle east with nuclear weapons so that tens of millions of jews can get fried? The guy who is encouraging race wars and cop kilking at home and applauds when cities burn themselves to the ground. The guy who lets russia do whatever it wants, and kill whoever is in their way? Yeah....I can’t remember a more peaceful time ever
Gee - Ya think?
They were so high then, they couldn’t.
They should have never awarded that arrogant pos in the first place.
At least Jimmy Carter was trying to do the right thing, in his own naive way. The others not so much.
I am 100 Percent certain that Alfred Nobel is turning around in his grave with disgust
