Syrians Find it Harder to Flee Country as Turkey Tightens Border Control

GUVECCI, Turkey—A little past midnight in this dusty border town, the only sounds other than crickets were smugglers herding newly arrived refugees into minibuses bound for a nearby city.

A slender woman from the Sahel al-Ghab region in northwestern Syria, where fighting between rebels and government forces has raged in recent weeks, is among the first of several waves of exhausted refugees to reach Guvecci on this September night. She said she and her husband paid a smuggler $130 to be led on a 15-minute dash by foot across the border.

The danger of getting caught before the minibus reached Antakya an hour away hadn’t passed. Turkish security forces have stepped up their patrols of the mountain roads, looking for vehicles loaded with Syrians who have crossed the border illegally. Any refugee intercepted will spend a night in jail and be sent back to Syria in the morning.

“The smugglers always say ‘it is easy’,” said the woman, her flowered dress dusty from negotiating a nearly 10-foot-deep trench the Turks have dug along a stretch of border to deter would-be refugees. “It never is.”

They were saying on the LSM that Turkish refugees were attempting to enter Greece.

Perhaps Syrians that Turkey is turning away?

Now Turkey, some in Greece probably after the weapons were found, Germany, Denmark, Hungary.

Oy what a mess. Great M/E policies there, O.

Why don’t they stay in Turkey? There is no war there... they fled the war, didn’t they?

Millions had been in refugee camps in Turkey for the last 2 years. Just recently, the UN said it has to stop food delivery to the camps due to lack of money. That's what caused this surge.

“the UN said it has to stop food delivery to the camps due to lack of money. That’s what caused this surge.”

Proving the UN is evil and this is a manufactured and deliberate “crisis”

This is why the UN is issuing new demands each day to Europe to take more and more of the filth.

Turkey needs to be forced to shut it’s entire border or else.

Sounds like Turkey doesn’t want them. If they’re Syrian Christians, it’s a foregone conclusion, I think.

If they’re jihadis, some of them, then the same. Saudi Arabia bred a lot of monsters over the years, and decades and centuries. It’s bearing some extremely-dangerous fruit. /Captain Incredibly Very Obvious

Why can’t the Turks integrate them into Turkish society?

75%+ fleeing are men.

They have no honor. They won’t even fight for their families or their homelands. We don’t need such coward sleaze here.

Now, they tighten it up, why not when people were joining ISIS?

Then, on the other hand, that land that borders Turkey should be Kurdistan and the Kurds wouldn’t let those people through. I was just thinking about this.

Maybe I have my maps off.

What the UN means by “running out of money” is that they reached the point of what they want to pay for that. There’s plenty of money, but they (UN masters) won’t give up their vig off the cache.

If Turkey doesn't want fellow Muslim refugees, why should Europe, or the US, take them?
