The GOP’s Donald Trump nightmare may soon get a whole lot worse (TPP)
Washington Post ^ | 9/11/15 | Greg Sargent

Posted on 09/13/2015 8:09:08 AM PDT by Drew68

So you think Donald Trump’s demagoguery on immigration has created problems for the other GOP candidates? Well, another very ripe opportunity for Trump to make his GOP rivals even more miserable may be lurking right around the corner, and it could expose the same sort of schism between GOP elites and GOP voters that Trump’s forays into immigration policy have.

I’m talking about the massive global trade deal called the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Some time in the next six months — in late 2015 or in early 2016 — the participating nations may finally reach a deal on the TPP. That may well come just when the GOP primaries are heating up.

Virtually all of the major GOP presidential candidates, including Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, and Marco Rubio, all support the TPP, as do Republican Congressional leaders.

But, in a little noticed move a few days ago, Trump signaled that he might be headed in a very different direction on the TPP soon enough. After his terrific and wonderful rally outside the Capitol the other day, Trump met with Senator Jeff Sessions, and both men enthusiastically recounted that they had had a good conversation about immigration and …. trade. Said Trump: “The meeting was great!”

Nightmare? I don’t see no steening nightmare. At least not for conservatives. But I’ll bet the pantywaist crowd is crapping its collectivist bed.

You are right about both terms.

It’s a matter of attitude. They create the wrong attitude.

The other term that irritates me is “Consumer”. I am not a Consumer but a Citizen.

A consumer is a mindless entity that can be easily manipulated.

The only beneficiaries are foreign workers and companies, Wall Street bankers, and executives at multinational companies.

The consumer did not benefit as the marginal cost reduction from exploiting coolie labor was not passed on to the retailer and hence it went to the bottom line. Therefore international stock holders were also beneficiaries of unrestricted, no duty, access to US markets. I hope it is not too late....

I don’t trust Cruz after these votes. He isn’t a stupid man so why did he do it?

The brilliant Sundance has some comments about Cruz:

I sometimes wonder if the TPP and H1B issues are what’s keeping Cruz in single digits"

It's the main reason I won't consider him. And the fact that until recently he also had dual citizenship with Canada. Other than that I would vote for him.

Totally agree, Ted is just wrong on key issues like trade and the delegation of power. Just another gutless reason we are in this mess. Come on Ted, make another speech, that’s going to show them.

Yes, indeed. Any GOOD analysis of the political situation should reference that and another article I read eaarlier that points out that the dimwits have stopped pretending to not be socialists.

The GOP policy could be described as enable democrats and, if possible, do from a position of minority

The nightmare they envision is that ideal coming to an end

They will fight back very hard they will do so stealthily like they do everything They speak in a soft voice and act like Vito Corleone

They are ruining the country. Swiftly. Is that what they want? Or are they so possessed by whatever drives them that they can’t see that?

“The GOP’s Donald Trump nightmare may soon get a whole lot worse (TPP)”

They forgot a letter: GOP >> GOPe

Use CONSERVATIVES in the base are generally VERY HAPPY with him so far.

As for TPP, WHAT THE HELL IS THE BIG HURRY??? How about we wait until Obama is out of office, instead of granting him more power, for once????

Is that too much to ask???

To be perfectly clear, "GOP elites" are actually ELECTED GOP Representatives.

Yes, Texas Eagle. That's the WHOLE POINT.

They were ELECTED on the promise to reign in Obama.

THEY BROKE THEIR PROMISE! THEY ARE WORKING ***WITH*** OBAMA!

Sorry for the all caps, but in my head I am yelling at my screen when I type these words.

The Congress is CERTAIN to approve TPP this Fall.

Certain.

TPA created a legislative construct that is identical to the IRAN deal.

It takes 2/3 of both Houses to override a POTUS veto.

And, every one of the traitorous GOP voted for TPA.

“The US is blessed to have the size, population, and resources to develop and sustain an independent economy. Few nations are so blessed”

Fabulous Post. Absolutely dead on.

Many times I hear Libertarians ridiculing the notion of protectionism by using absurd examples - “should I have an import duty around my house?” - which is disingenuous at minimum and fraudulent at worst.

The fact is there is some optimal size for a trade group. Thousands of years and thousands of attempts have been made at this. All empires are an example.

Most fail because they get too big. Others fail because they were too small and stayed that way - look at the economies of the Central American countries. Tariffs between those countries is a joke.

So there is some optimum where a group of political entities - “states” - have it just about right: free trade among themselves, with virtually all goods needed being produced within the zone.

Once connected to the Pacific, the United States became that place. The Founders understood that future and certainly guys like Seward understood it - you can read his speeches on the admission of California for a sense of that.

“The current low tariff policies only serve to support the globalist socialist state agenda. Twenty-five years of modern free trade theories have resulted in the deindustrialization of the economy, declining standards of living for the American worker, the death of a large middle class, the decline of job creating small business, and rising income disparity”

Absolutely true. These are trade policies that benefited only the other nations, and a few transnationals. And as I noted above to Liz, there were other social motivating factors: gotta cut the whites down to size, ya know? Too powerful, too successful.

This is the rhetoric of the losers. Resentment of others success being the justification for looting as reparations.

World trade now is sold as “social justice”, and of course opposition is bought by huge rewards to the banker/ceo classes. An unholy alliance if there ever was one.

No nation simply walks away from its means of sustenance, no matter how many pithy lines from Bastiat that you can quote. While protected industries can lead to stagnation, and Japanese cars showed just how far off the deep end Detroit really was, it doesn’t mean that you throw in the towel and abandon all hope. You modify and change, and enable domestic competition.

Absent that, and in the face of aggressive, ruthless, state supported competition, you will end up losing it all very quickly, and being dependent on unfriendly faces for pretty much everything.

...oh yea, and his opposition to TPP will help him shake loose MILLIONS OF VOTERS from the Dems, mainly white working-class voters.

...putting him that much close to not only winning the top prize, but winning it with a HUGE MANDATE.

Absolute TERROR in for the GOPe.

It’s absolutely impossible for Cruz to get my vote because of his H1B position. I’m as conservative as they come. TTP is just more propellant.

Ha…and the distinguished neurosurgeon…..whare is he on this….?

Another smart pre-emptive move by Trump

Using the TPP as a lever against Carson and to a lesser extent Cruz.

Hope he makes this a focal point in the next debate.

"I sometimes wonder if the TPP and H1B issues are what’s keeping Cruz in single digits."

Trade and Immigration are the reasons I will never vote for Ted Cruz.

I don't know if he truly believes in the votes he's cast and the positions he's advocated, or if he is paid for them.

And I don't care.

No need to apologize. I got my big boy Pull-Ups on.

I'm tired of hearing about "the Republican brand" and "what's good for the Republican Party".

Scroo the Republican brand. Double-scroo the Republican Party.

We need to remind them that we are THEIR bosses, not the other way around.

Indeed, first we need to remind ourselves.

The thing that bothers me as much as Cruz’s vote on the Corker bill, is his supporters reaction to it.

I admit there are a lot of things that make me uncomfortable about Trump’s past. I hope that he has seen the light on them. I also hope that it is reasoned to judge them in a business environment rather than political, even if I don’t like that either.

People have a right to address these issues. I have a right to try to explain them in a manner that can allow people to at least understand them as I do, even if they too wind up uncomfortable about them.

You mention the Corker bill to a Cruz supporter, and there’s no recognition whatsoever that it was a big problem.

TPP? I mean, what could go wrong. We’ve got tens of millions of able bodied U. S. Citizens sitting on their rears now (AS MANY OF US PREDICTED THERE WOULD BE), and now they want to expand into other cheap labor markets.

These people won’t be happy until every single non-sales job is destroyed here.

There’s a word that covers destroying your own nation for a profit. Gee, what was it?

Started with a “T” or something...
