Kim again? North Korea leader backs surfing to revive ailing tourism industry
NORTH KOREA leader Kim Jong-un is forever looking for ways to expand his country's rather narrow cultural agenda.
By Harry Kemble / Published 12th September 2015
His latest brainwave is to turn his backward state into a surfing haven.
Tourism fell by 40% last year in North Korea and it is hoped the water sport will help boost figures.
Despot Kim has reportedly given permission for a surfing camp to be held on the east coast and a group of 20 surfers are on their way.
Nicola Zanella an Italian surfer and Chinese national surfing team coach and Andrea Lee chief executive of US travel company Uri Tours are said to be leading the group.
Nicola said he believes the communist country has a lot of surfing potential.
He said: "It looks like there are wild forests that lead to pink or yellow sand bays.

Kim has a knack for staying in the headlines. Well, not as good as Trump, but better than any politicians I can think of.

Who in their right mind would tour North Korea?
I don’t doubt it would be interesting, perhaps there are natural formations that are truly beautiful. But if you are from the U.S., you stand a good chance of getting yourself kidnapped or imprisoned over various and sundry unwritten laws.

I have no idea what surf Nazis have to do with surf North Koreans, but it was the first thing I thought of. Well the second after "Charlie don't surf", but that's Vietnam.

Who in their right mind would tour North Korea? In all probability, most of the "tourists" are simply old S. Koreans attempting to visit their N. Korean relatives (brothers, sisters) for a few days, hand over a few "CARE" packages, and then leave without actually "touring" the country.
I suppose that, what with N. Korea now having been isolated for more than 60 years, such family reunions are becoming more and more seldom.

When I lived in Hong Kong you could take guided tours into North Korea - as long as you were Chinese looking
Evidently there are a fair number of people that go there
