“...but for what reason remains unclear.”

Good solid fetch upside the head. With maybe a white-elm club.

The Russians are declaring their SUPPORT for Bashar al-Assad, and their opposition to ISIS. Assad may be an SOB, but he will be the RUSSIANS’ SOB, not our boogie man.

Putin and the Russian Federation would like very much to damp down the Syrian civil war, which is quickly degenerating into total chaos. It is clear that what remains of any credibility in the capability of the entity once known as “the United States of America” to maintain control of the situation, has been completely shredded in the past six year or so.

Interesting sidelight to the story - Iran would very much also like to assure that Assad stays in power, thus making Russian and Iran de facto allies, if any such thing may exist with Iran in respect to everybody else in the world.

“The U.S. position is that “any effort to bolster the Assad regime would potentially be destabilizing.””

But creating ISIS and handing out freebies to the “moderate” sunni jihadis isn’t. What a weird world where our government is the bad guys, and the Russians are giving hope to Syrian Christians.

Here is a thought exercise. Let’s say that it’s 1864 and the United States and Southern Confederacy have been bled dry. Every family has suffered a loss. Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln are presented with nuclear weapons. Would they use them against their enemy? In comparison with today’s politicians these were exceptionally moral men. But each was dedicated to the defeat of the other and they would feel they owed stopping the slaughter as soon as possible to their constituents. It would be a short decision period.

The Syrian civil war has been more devastating in relation to their population than the America Civil War was to our population. I can see the Syrians and the economically weak Russians using every tool in their very expensive and, if not used, useless, arsenal.

I think it will start small, with chemical attacks that kill hundreds or thousands. Obama will respond with a red line in the sand and then another and another. Perhaps he’ll send a letter abhorring the behavior and accuse them of being weak or some such. But if the chemicals don’t work then stronger means will be used. Russia can’t afford another Afghanistan. Nor can they afford to be weak when we obviously are weak in leadership. Only a little over a year remains with Obama in power to resolve this before America may reemerge to be a world player again. Act now or never, they’ll think.

Having a weak metrosexual in the Whitehouse as opposed to an inarticulate threatening cowboy may well lead to slaughter on a scale not seen since World War II. Oh, the irony.

Syria is and has been a Russian ally. This is none of our business.

“A U.S. official says every indication is that Russia is setting up a forward operating base, but for what reason remains unclear. “

That’s a real head scratcher isn’t it? Is something going on in Syria that the government might need help with? I hope we have some intel analysts who can help figure this out.

Well, all we really need is Obama watching the news each night. Right?

Reason: Russia and ISIS are at war. Time to chop thew head off as the US is unable to muster the political will - Barry and the Dems would prefer to fight them here until the polls indicate otherwise and then surrender.

“Kerry said it could further escalate the conflict, increase refugee flows and raise the threat of confrontation with the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS.)”

Interesting, I guess when we support the rebels none of that happens. And a question, if the Russians want to bomb the isis, and WE are supposedly bombing isis (3 or 4 entire bombs a day!) How could there be a Russian/US confrontation?

Like both of us attacking the same target? OR, do we really not want isis and the rebels attacked at all?

Assad is the good guy, as was Mubarak, and Kildaffi (since he got rid of his WMD and allied with the west fighting terrorists).

The Muslim brotherhood and their sponsor are the bad guys.

If you haven t figured it out yet, Putin is a good guy.
