The late, great writer and reporter Michael Kelly was a guest on my radio show almost weekly from its debut in July of 2000 through his death outside of Baghdad in April 2003. So was Christopher Hitchensmore than 70 times in factuntil his death in late 2011. Kelly always emphasized that journalism was a craft, not a profession and Hitchens that it was very much a moral crusade. I think it is both, and more. It is part of a functioning, free democratic Republic, and its practitioners must not be intimidated.
The very best journaliststhose who go to the front lines of combat like Kelly and Hitchens, John Fisher Burns, Rajiv Chandrasekaran, Dexter Filkins, Robert Kaplan, David Kirkpatrick, Thomas Ricks and scores of others routinely ask tough questions of the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines they cover, from the privates to the generals. These journalists set a standard for desk jockeys like me who cover politics and public policy but who have never been remotely in harms way. I think we who work from the comfort of studios owe it to the public generally, and specifically to men and women deployed at the tips of various spears around the world, to ask would-be presidents how they will conduct themselves as Commander-in-Chief.
In the weeks since the first GOP presidential debate I have conducted 30 interviews with would-be nominees. Some have been prickly. (John Kasich as my home state governor seems particularly entitled to mock me and my questions, which is fine by me. He is a Steelers fan after all.) In my view all 30 have been fair. Some disagree about my Thursday interview with Donald Trump, the fourth I conducted with him in the past month. Other earlier interviews from the spring have also caused other candidates

Regardless of support or opposition to Trump, yes, Hugh, you did.
They’re only “gotchas” if you can’t answer.
Who cares about naming Muslims whom we hope will be killed by drones long before the U.S. elections? Another militant Muslim is always ready to step in to take up the cause, and they are all named Mohammed or variations of the name, so “Mohammed” should be the standard answer to these gotcha questions about terrorists.
All GOP candidates should avoid his interviews. The Democrat media never asks those questions of their candidates, and it’s stupid for Republican candidates to appear on any of these shows.
Isn’t he special? He’s a great journalist as he keeps saying. I think he looks like Alan Luden on Password.
In those Old Days, Mr. Hewitt's support for a contentious issue would disqualify him as a serious journalist. He's a political hack with an agenda, because of that advocacy.
Trump had a senior moment. Big deal. Nobody can know everything. I thought the interview was fair.
They were ridiculous questions. Who cares what the names of all those neck-slashing goat-humpers are? Do you know them all?
And if the questions were so great, why didn’t Hewitt repeat them in this article?
Because he’d rather obfuscate with a long-winded piece about how great he is.
I agree.
Hewitt is just a butt-hurt GOPe Amnesty Pimp so he comes up with soreloserman Trivial Pursuit questions like “Who is Ali-Achmed al-Goat Fornicator?” as his revenge.
He should just admit that he lost on Amnesty and be a man about instead of instead of a smartass teenager.
Welcome fellow blasphemer. LOL
He reminds me of John Anderson, who tried to undermine Reagan in the 1980 election.
So Hugh, let me ask you a couple questions from the list that every single NCO candidate in the army is asked during his or her questioning.
What is the muzzle velocity of the M855 ball ammo out of an M-4 carbine?
His need to explain he was fair indicates to me Trump won battle big.
If they’re not gotcha questions, why don’t these same ‘journalists’ ask similar questions of Dems?
In ‘08, they could have stumped Obama by asking him how many states there are.
The GOPe Amnesty Pimps and their cabanas boys in the “conservative” media are melting down thanks to Trump. Their desperation is sad and hilarious at the same time.
Years ago I listened for a time to his radio show.
It got tiring hearing him club callers over the head with his law degree.
This is where I disagree with Trump. Hugh Hewitt is not a third rate radio show host.
He’s definitely a second rate radio host!
Not a gotcha questions, he was just chewing his Quds.
