The father of a Syrian toddler whose body washed up on a Turkish beach says his boys "slipped away" from his hands after their rowboat capsized trying to reach the Greek island of Kos from Turkey with several other refugees.
"I was holding my wife's hand, my children slipped away from my hands," Abdullah Kurdi said in a statement to police obtained by the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet. "We tried to hold on to the boat. Everyone was screaming in pitch darkness. I couldn't make my voice heard to my wife and kids."
The death of Kurdi's three-year-old son, Alan, who drowned along with his brother, Galib, 5, and mother, Reham, has drawn worldwide attention to the Syrian refugee crisis and placed the Canadian government under fire after it emerged the family had been trying to come to Canada with the help of their aunt, Tima Kurdi.
Abdullah Kurdi spoke publicly for the first time Thursday after he identified the bodies of his wife and sons in a Turkish morgue and prepared to take them home to Syria.
Kurdi said he got on a boat with 13 people, including the man steering the boat. He said the boat was heavy in the water.
"We sailed in the sea for about four to five minutes," he said. "The man steering the boat saw that the sea was high, the waves were high.
"We were hit by the first wave and he jumped into the water and escaped away. I tried to take over the steering but we were hit by another wave. The boat capsized. I grabbed my children and my wife. But they died."

What difference at this point does it make
All this focus on one smacks of advocacy reporting.
“Women and children first” has a completely different meaning to Muslims — than it does to civilized people.
Why would you flee to economically ruined Greece?
Why did your Muslim buddys in Ankara turn you out?
Prayers for for all involved.
Someone call Obama and Hillary Clinton and ask them to explain the chaos in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya and Egypt and if they may have had a hand in it
This is what the CBC does.
Our CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp) is almost as leftist and malicious as your CBC.
And notice how they slipped in the part abut them trying to come to Canada?
Any chance to shift part of the blame to Stephen Harper, the CBC is there. Especially with a federal election going on.
But seriously, who gets into an overloaded, open (no spray decks) rowboat in choppy seas in the middle of the night? These people are the authors of their own misfortune.
As Obama has explained, “None of these rough seas would have transpired if it were not for man made global climate change”
She has since clarified that she did not apply to sponsor Abdullah Kurdi and his family, but her other brother, Mohammed, and that the application was rejected for being incomplete. Somehow this relevant fact has gotten lost in all the outrage at how supposedly callous the Canadian Government is for refusing their non-existent application.
As tragic as the death of two toddlers and their mother is, particularly in so horrible a fashion, Canada is not to blame. Abdullah Kurdi made a poor choice to put his family in danger by crossing open water on an overloaded boat, whose captain abandoned them to fend for themselves when the water got rough.
And THAT'S the real answer. What kind of father puts his children in jeopardy like that? Were there ISIS gunmen standing on the beach behind them?
HE's responsible. Those little boys trusted their father. HE failed them.
I would NEVER put my son at risk like that.
I have kept a close watch on CBC and CTV on Canadian television. They now have their moment and latched on to it with a scarcely concealed agenda. Someone on CBC Radio one was earnestly trying to organize groups to sponsor refugees. He scorned the Canadian government's insistence of previous numbers of Syrian refugees admitted. He said we cannot find a Syrian family anywhere. Meant his location, I presume. Call on church groups and ordinary citizens, he advised
I am reminded of the horrifying picture taken in Vietnam. A female child, who was naked and crying fled from a napalm attack. Survived and lives happily today. The outrage and vitriol mounted against that war, the picture helped. I learned later it was the South Vietnamese air force who dropped the napalm.
They got what they wanted and destroyed Lyndon Baines Johnson's presidency.
Leftists to the core.
Why don’t you go ask your muslim brethren for asylum and leave the Christian countries alone!
That's a rather unusual assertion. Did they hang the beach upside-down by mistake before shooting the photo?
What’s so bad about Turkey that they felt they had to escape?
Just deserts considering the shameful commercial LBJ did with the girl and the flower implying that Goldwater would get us nuked.
I feel awful for the little boy. I also feel awful for the Western world, which is being flooded with fake refugees. Something is very odd about this sudden influx of invaders. It reminds me of the “unaccompanied minors” that flooded the US last year, all of a sudden. I would not be surprised if someone or some group is coordinating all of this. It is not organic.
Something smells fishy about the father’s story.
It sure does. That is why the cowardly terrorists always hide behind women and put children in front
As usual you are full of it
