Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz said Thursday that he "unequivocally" supported Kim Davis, the defiant Kentucky clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.
"I stand with Kim Davis. Unequivocally," the Texas senator said in a statement on his campaign website. "I stand with every American that the Obama administration is trying to force to choose between honoring his or her faith or complying with a lawless court opinion."
Davis, the Rowan County clerk, was jailed by U.S. District Judge David Bunning until she complied with his order to issue the licenses.
The clerk stopped issuing licenses to all couples in June after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage. Despite rulings against her, she's turned away couples again and again, citing her Christian beliefs and "God's authority."
GOP candidates Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee also support Davis.
"Today, judicial lawlessness crossed into judicial tyranny," said Cruz, who has made religious liberty a hallmark of his White House run. "Today, for the first time ever, the government arrested a Christian woman for living according to her faith.
"This is wrong," he added. "This is not America."

is there some powerhourse law firm rushing to Davis’ aid?
is there a donation account set up yet to assist Davis?
thanks
Cruz and Paul are making the right stand on this issue.
This is real political courage; a bold stand, and I am proud of both, and any others who join them.
Yep, it's only "a law" when the Crimmigrant-In-Chief or "Felony" Clinton are trying to bludgeon one of their enemies with it.
Otherwise, the progressives just ignore "the law"...
Was just listening to Nedved on the radio, something I usually avoid. I’m glad he is beating cancer, not much after that. He just excoriated Cruz for his statement backing this lady. It was more than obvious he has it in for Cruz way beyond this issue.
She'll be used in the next debate to try to take down Trump.
Any religious opinion she has was programmed into her by the Washington DC Uniparty.
I didn’t Paul’s response. Do you have a link, I would like to read it.
Well now, this is the first time I have warmed to the man.

Both Cruz and Trump should go to the jail where is this brave lady and visit her and post the video so that it can viral. People should go to the jail, too, and pray the Rosary, that she be freed from jail. It worked for Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia, the children of Fatima.
She's in jail for what she believes in...
Hillary is a danger to our national security and she's free....
What is wrong with this picture?????????????????
I am already sick of the phrase “stand with”. ‘Stand with’ is empty political rhetoric. It doesn’t accomplish anything by itself. I can say I stand with the giraffes in the Serengeti — so what? Far from empty rhetoric, civil disobedience and civil war are what are needed to fix things.
I agree: that should be tried before the more dramatic remedies I suggested.
Neither is the senior Senator from South Carolina:
“Another Republican presidential candidate, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, told MSNBC before the ruling that Davis had to abide by the Supreme Court ruling.”

That is par for Linda’s course. But she is the Pride of South Carolina.
Just more proof that Fiorina is nowhere near a conservative.
Thank you for the link. I’m glad Rand has voiced his objections.
