Police departments face a recruiting shortage amid a growing anti-cop mood that some fear has taken the pride out of peacekeeping and put targets on the backs of the men and women in blue.
Open calls for the killing of police have been followed by assassinations, including last week's murder in Texas of a Harris County sheriff's deputy. Instead of dialing back the incendiary rhetoric, groups including "Black Lives Matter" have instead doubled down at demonstrations with chants of "Pigs in a blanket, fry me like bacon." Public safety officials fear the net effect has been to demonize police, and diminish the job.
"It's a lot harder to sell now," Jeff Roorda, business manager of the St. Louis Police Officers Association and former state representative, told FoxNews.com. "This is a very real phenomenon."

"You no longer just have to worry about your life while in uniform," he said. "Now you have to be worried about the well-being of your family," he said.

Knowing police face public scorn or career-ending legal battles even if they acted properly has convinced many prospective cops to abandon their dreams of patrolling America's streets.
"I saw all this anti-cop propaganda and I was like, 'Who needs this?' said Antonio, a New Yorker who asked that only his first name be used. The 32-year-old had applied and been accepted into the NYPD academy, but withdrew his candidacy amid the cop-bashing climate sweeping the country.
Even top police brass understand why the shield has lost its shine.
"Right now, policing is not the most attractive occupation that they could probably get into," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey told CBS.

The climate out there seems to be that, in any altercation between blacks and police, that if something goes wrong, that somehow it is the fault of the police involved.
Crime rates are rising in cities with big black populations. how much of that is due to police not being proactive anymore, due to fears of a career ending event?????
Last time police were targeted was when Scarface was in power in the east side of Chicago.
I am not surprised. This is going to go on through next year. Groups like BLM KNOW that if you get a conservative or a get tough on crime person in as President it is over for them.
All of this is part of the grand design.
Obama has achieved his greatest success to date: Killing our protections, in both police and Iran
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Exactly what Obie wants - now he will have to come in and take over the local police with his CIVIL MILITARY (whatever that is).
Police and policing relies on the fact that at worst, all but the criminals pay little attention to them. The mood of a significant portion of blacks has gone super negative. We’re talking about blacks who are just ordinary citizens who have been turned to race baiters by Obama’s comments or the overblown news reports heaped on top of the mostly Democratic rhetoric they’ve heard their entire lives. So, somewhere in that group there’s a guy with less than average impulse control who sees a cop and jeers, or keys the car or pees in the drink he’s pouring. That’s the low end aggression. Bur with enough aggression, like the broken window, somebody in their group will go the next step and shoot a cop. Instead of being turned in, he’ll be seen as a hero, which will drive others to violence. Like the broken window, this could spiral out of control. Obama and Sharpton could stop it, but they won’t. Elections have consequences.
This decline in police academy enrollments and the increase on black on white crimes and blacks shooting cops is all part of Obama’s scheme to destabilize America so he can federalize his troops and send them into our cities.
Good. Less cops to shoot up peace loving biker gangs.
Who'd want to be a cop, in this climate? FWIW, Fred Reed (FredonEverything.net) has been writing about this for some time. Society didn't just arrive here in the past few months.
That is why I say next year’s elections could be based on the issue of feeling secure, both at home and around the world.
Not only are the cops aware of all this, but so is the general voting public.
I see a bloodbath coming the next election, assuming someone like Trump is the candidate, and the democrats will be the ones slaughtered.
No one likes the destruction of America except the ones doing the destroying and the protected political class.
Were not the biker gangs armed also?
Yeah, it’s just no fun if you can’t bust in door, shoot people and dogs at will, and crack skulls without someone getting upset about it.
I guess Obama will just have to send in his federal storm troopers to keep the peace. Just like he suggested we should do years ago, coincidentally
To be replaced by people Obama WILL support.
