Bernard Goldberg: Conservative Purists Could Cost the GOP the White House in 2016
National Review ^ | September 1, 2015 | Bernard Goldberg

Posted on 09/01/2015 3:49:31 PM PDT by EveningStar

... While 26 percent of Republicans say they would never vote for Trump, only 11 percent of Democrats say they would never vote for Clinton. Democrats don’t have the same kind of ideologically pure wing that has hurt GOP presidential candidates in the past. Democrats, it seems, are more practical. They may prefer Bernie Sanders, or one of the others, but when push comes to shove, almost all of them will vote for Clinton. Why? They want to win.

I recently received an e-mail from someone named Carl who described himself as a conservative Christian, and he wrote, "I have voted Republican since Eisenhower beat Stevenson, and if Jeb, Christie, Kasich, or Graham are nominated, I WILL STAY HOME!" ...

These purists have told me that there's little or no difference between a moderate Republican and a liberal Democrat. They're delusional, of course, blinded by their hard-right ideology, but that's what they believe nonetheless. And depending on who the GOP nominee is, they could represent big trouble for the party ...

Well, I do like the fact that Trump fights back. It’s refreshing. But Cruz does too.

I can’t stand Bernie. Liberal hardliners/purists get victory. We don’t.

“Did you read the whole article, or just the excerpt?”

There was an article?

Did Goldberg redeem himself in the article, or was he as asinine there as he was in the excerpt?

For heavens sake, the purist shouldn't be in support of Trump, yet look at his poll numbers. Enough people are mad and they want someone with fire and passion...

What sticks in the back of my mind is that long conversation Trump had with Bill Clinton. Any exchange anyone has had with Clinton longer than "Hi" and "Bye" should excite suspicion -- he's that bad news.

I'm thinking of the timing of Trump's campaign announcement (right after the conversation) and that old saying about Slick and Beastwoman: "You can say one thing about the Clintons: When they need something from you, they're there for you."

Yes, the Cochran/McDaniel race was where they showed their hole card.

At least I gave to McDaniel, from far away .... I can sleep at night, knowing I raised my hand against Yurtle the Turtle and his open hypocrisy and collaborationism.

When I made my original post I only read the excerpt.
Now that I read the article my opinion has not changed. Goldberg is missing the point. He does not distinguish between people who are "conservative purists" that will not vote for Bush and reasonable people like myself who are fed with being insulted by a member of a family that they supported since the Reagan administration.

I voted for Romney and think he would have been far better than the Marxist crook in the White House but enough is enough. If Bush wanted my vote he should have spent the last 8 years studying the Constitution instead of studying how to make a good guacamole auditioning for the Ambassador to Mexico.

imo, Trump is not a conservative purist either. I wish he were! I believe that some of the time he is sincere, but much of the time he is just telling us what we want to hear.

“They’re delusional, of course, blinded by their right-wing ideology...”

Why are clinical terms always applied to the minds of so-called right-wingers?

Just asking.

IMHO

Milquetoast moderate Republicans cost the GOP the Presidency in 1992, 1996, 2008, and 2012, just for starters.

Your statement implies that some other candidates other than the actual ones in those years could have won...care to share with us who those mystery candidates were...?

Do you think if Bush hadn’t gone soft on taxes he’d have lost on 1992?

And you’re really defending the idea that there was no one better than Dole, McCain, and Romney in those years? Really?
