WASHINGTON (AP) Shrinking glaciers, Arctic temperatures and a mix of messy energy politics await President Barack Obama on his historic trip to Alaska. Even before he departed, Obama was making waves with a decision to rename Alaska's famed Mount McKinley despite a backlash from Ohio politicians.
Obama flies to Anchorage on Monday morning for a three-day tour of the nation's largest state, closely choreographed to call attention to the ways Obama says climate change is already damaging Alaska's stunning scenery. By showcasing thawing permafrost, melting sea ice and eroding shorelines, Obama hopes to raise the sense of urgency to deal quickly to slow climate change in the U.S. and overseas.
His excursion north of the Arctic Circle will make Obama the first sitting president to step foot in the Alaska Arctic, home to Alaska Natives who have received less attention amid Obama's recent efforts to improve conditions for Native Americans. In a major show of solidarity, Obama announced on the eve of his trip that his administration is changing the name of North America's tallest peak, Mount McKinley, to Denali, its traditional Athabascan name.
Obama's move to strip the mountain of its name honoring former President William McKinley, a son of Ohio, drew loud condemnations from Ohio lawmakers, including House Speaker John Boehner, who said he was "deeply disappointed" in the decision.

Waves? No, it’s a desperate, sad grasping for relevance by a lame duck whose ego can’t countenance the reality of his failed presidency and the fact that nobody cares anymore.
It’s a safe bet that the meaningless renaming of inanimate objects is not legacy material. Naturally, it inflames his political enemies but by now nobody should be surprised at rabble-rousing tactics and he should be roundly ignored. This, of course, will only enrage him which will make it all the more satisfying.
Probably the same way we handle Mt. Rainier National Park vs Mt. Rainier.
That’s a load of propaganda. Mount McKinley is a lot better. There is already is a Denali National Park and this is not good enough? Just more PC jive!
I am sure that a case of Boehner's finest will take care of any angst he may have.
I doubt it. This is really nothing. Denali is and has been the name of the mountain. We should save our outrage for the many things Obama does that’s worthy of it.
Alaska could stop him in his tracks.
It’s getting hard enough to even find voters who remember that Eisenhower was President. Let alone McKinley.
Does the turd in the white hut have the power to do this? Oh wait - I forgot he as anointed emperor, not president.
I was in Alaska a few years back and recall the locals called it by it’s original name. Would like to hear from Alaskan residents on this matter. This issue seems more of a thumb in the eye than anything else. As far as Ohioans go, they can suck it. Boehner, Kasich, and voting for Obama in 08 and 12 take my sympathies away.
Well said, thank you sir.
...”House Speaker John Boehner, who said he was “deeply disappointed” in the decision.”
I have renamed the green spot over the septic tank the ‘obama patch’.
I feel like I have accomplished a lot!
No, it's not. It's McKinley!!
Maybe he'll cry.
I remember noting some years ago that the park was called Denali while the mountain was called Mt. McKinley and thinking now there is a nice compromise that everyone can support. Silly me ... the left never stops whining.
Nah, Lord Foul only Mt. Men. Think about it.
Obamer is fascinated by big things. I’m surprised he didn’t want to name it Mt. Phallus.
There’s less snow and ice in August than any other time of the year. But, hey, that’s just a coincidence.
