Republican operatives, insiders affiliated with no campaign and donors with whom Right Turn spoke last week are not pleased about the state of the GOP race. They will say something like: Yeah, its early. Yeah, Rudy Giuliani never became president. But still. They will tell you public polling is exaggerated, although internal polling shows him leading. They are angst-ridden over Donald Trumps staying power, but more than that, the inability of the other candidates to respond effectively and present themselves as an effective alternative.
These Republicans, on one hand, despair that an egocentric bully with no discernible political principles should be leading in polls. They observe that his incoherent mix of authoritarianism, protectionism and cronyism is antithetical to the modern conservative movement, and in tone is 180 degrees from Ronald Reagan. But they also note that he is building an organization and displaying P.T. Barnum showmanship, as one veteran of GOP presidential campaigns put it. They shake their heads, unable to fully comprehend Trumps appeal, but more than that they are disturbed by the rest of the field. They do not believe Trump will be the nominee, but high hopes for a deep, quality field have not been met. In particular, they are worried that Trumps embrace of nativism will doom the party if mimicked by others.

The interesting thing in her piece is the idea that Trump’s opponents can simply run a bunch of TV ads showing liberal positions by Trump.
Personally I think most people are tired of TV ads and they won’t work.
Secondly, if the GOPe decides to spend $200-300 million on “Trump is a Dem” TV ads, doesn’t that position Trump better then for the general election with those “moderate” voters that we supposedly sold ourselves out to get with McCain and Romney but never did?
I think so. This whole deal where we elect people to go to Washington and they ignore what we want, and what we sent them there for, and what they promised to do.... this deal is going to end I think. Bush is an idiot. I don’t think he stands a chance....
“...offering reported opinion from a RINO perspective...”
Sorry, but there is no such thing as either conservative or RINO perspective on the WoPo. This writer is just another flaming liberal in Megyn garb. (Yes, I know, this is like sayin’ a wolf in wolf garb)
Exactly. On immigration the last thing Rubin offers is a conservative perspective.
“...the inability of the other candidates to respond effectively and present themselves as an effective alternative.”
That’s because Trump challenges them to do things they can’t possibly do, because, for the most part, they ARE ineffective as they face the fetid swamp that is the FedGov.
Of course! D@mned politicians just won't stay bought!
Yep - when nickcarraway "swears by her", you know something is not right with her views...
;^)
Ruben's take of Trump and Carson leading in the Des Moines Register poll is far from target, and
Criticism on Trump (using Club for Growth) is legitimate that Trump is not a fiscal conservative. But Club for Growth failed to ‘advertise’ which candidate is a true fiscal conservative. Note, you can't be fiscal anything without addressing the illegal immigration as top priority.
Ruben supports Jeb! (failing that, Kasich her second choice). THAT is unacceptable.
"Club for Growth president David McIntosh has written that Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, and Ted Cruz are the real deal candidates, the gold standard of the race," and that while questions remain, Jeb Bush and Scott Walker have shown some pro-growth stances.[135] In August 2015, the Club for Growth PAC announced it would formally support presidential candidates for the first time, saying the group would bundle donations for Cruz, Rubio, Walker, Bush, and Paul."
Rubin began with such a balanced view of Trump, that I wondered if we should tar and feather him now or later?
If being a fiscal conservative means that you think a pure flat tax is going to pass in Congress or a pure "fair tax", then fiscal conservatives truly live in the land of butterflies and unicorns.
In actual fact, Romney blew the tax debate last time around, and the Americans who bothered to vote last time around believe that the rich should be taxed more. They also believe in simplicity...which they don't have, and they believe in everyone paying some, and they believe in lower taxes...so long as the rich pay more.
So, sell a 15-20% flat tax to these folks and tell them that for many of them their taxes will go up. Tell the voters wondering what the heck is a fair tax that odds are they're going to have BOTH an income tax and a new sales tax, because passing a constitutional amendment isn't very likely. IOW, their taxes will go up.
In reality, Trump just proposed about the only tax change that will actually fly. Like it or not. He might not be a "fairy dust and magic wand" fiscal conservative, but at least he's a realist about what will actually pass.
Would I be ok with simpler, flatter, and less? Yep. It's not perfection, but how much in life really is?
HA!!!
LOL. You've been busted in another lie. I have never "sworn by her," or praised her at all. Find a single post where I have praised Rubin, or even mentioned her at all.
I ignore her. She's just another RINO at the Post. The truth is Rubin is a Romney person - so she's in with Trump.
By the way, I'll be waiting for you to come up with a post where I said something good about Rubin. Or just another Trumper using lies to promote their idol.
It’s typical that a Romneyite would write an article trying to promote Trump as something he’s not. This article is pure B.S. - Trump bought B.S.
You have my sincere apologies - I don't need mistakes like that to point out what I consider to be your errant ways.
My apologies for the mix-up.
Indeed ! That’s the understatement of the night.
