A group of black women from a book club were kicked off a wine tour in Napa at the weekend - sparking accusations of racism on the company's part. One of the women, Lisa Johnson, said it was 'humiliating' when she and her friends were escorted off the Napa Valley Wine Train by a police officer. The company said the women had been spoken to several times by the train manager after complaints from other customers that they were laughing and talking too loudly. But one passenger who witnessed the incident later claimed that it was clearly racially motivated.
The Napa Valley Wine Train offers a 'three-hour journey through world famous vineyards: wine tours, wine tasting & great dining'. The women - who all wore matching T-shirts with their book club's slogan, 'Sistahs on the Reading Edge' - departed on the train on Saturday shortly before noon. They admit that they were laughing and talking with one another as they enjoyed their wine. At one point, a fellow passenger told the ladies - including an 83-year-old grandmother - 'this isnt a bar', while a manager said they needed to quiet down.
Johnson said no one was 'intoxicated' but that a few of the ladies were 'rambunctious' at times, which most passengers did not seem to mind as they chatted with the women and snapped photos.

Wonder if that passenger was wearing racialist colored glasses?
I was at Travis from 1984 to 1988, when I retired. I worked in the Control Tower at Travis. Then I worked 2 years at San Quentin, and 23 years at Solano in Vacaville. The Skunk Train ride was a bit of a letdown. I would not do it again.
They actually don’t look like a bad bunch of gals. I imagine they were having just a little too much fun - too bad they didn’t simmer down when asked the first time.
Are all black people loud and obnoxious? No
Are all loud and obnoxious people black? No
Is it common among black people in some parts of the country to be loud and obnoxious? Yes
Are they doing this to draw attention and proclaim their “blackness”? In my opinion, yes.
Speaking of that area, there was an end to an era out there in Vacaville along I-80 — the Nut Tree signs came down. Hated to see that happen.. I always considered that the unofficial passage from the Sacramento Valley to the upper Bay Area.
Suppose nobody enjoys the company of loud and obnoxious idiots....
Go figure!
What you said.
My feeling is it probably was not done intentionally, but when a large group gets lit up it very frequently gets loud. The trouble was the defensiveness when they were asked to keep it down.
thanks for sharing. I thought the place was kind of a hell-hole when I was there, a patch work base of mis-matched buildings, too too many aircraft crammed on that ever-windy airfield and constant jet noise. However, I went back there in 2000 on one of my last Air Guard trips and the whole place had been transformed. Most of the structures had been renovated or replaced by nicely coordinated design and architecture. The Starlifter chow hall in the 1300 area was completely rebuilt and was as nice as a 3 star restaurant. The C-141s and KC-135s were gone and there was ample ramp space for the C-5s and KC-10s. What a nice, quiet visit it was.
They could have their own car, separate, at the back of the train?
Is it wrong that I laughed really hard at this.....???
Bring on the Blacks only Wine Train.
It goes from Philly to NYC via the Hood Corridor.
Sit in the comfort of you filthy seats and dirty cars and watch the local chil’ren toss rocks and shoot at you as you are getting hammered on crap wine.
Scream hollar and just plane woop it up as there will be no civilized folk to be offended..

i came to the unscientific conclusion many years ago that many (not all)
african americans are hearing impaired. answers a lot of questions.
I did not know, but I never paid a lot of attention to it. The Nut Tree is still there, including the airport and restaurants. I know gliders used to fly too, but I am not sure if they took off from the Nut Tree, or some other airport. I used to watch on radar, the flights going into the Nut Tree, because it crossed the final approach course to runway 21 at Travis.
It turned in to a “whine” train...
Probably not intentionally, but its a learned behavior like many things we all do.
Some people refuse to adapt their behavior to their environment. Instead they expect the people around them to adapt. Its a complete lack of respect for other people.
Narcissistic and selfish, but its not limited to black people.
I suspect they threatened staff.
Yes, lots of new buildings. I remember that dining hall in front of the 1300 area. I ate there a couple of times, many years after I retired. They also have C-17s filling up the ramp. The airport was very busy when I was there, but not much anymore. The old David Grant up on the hill, has been rebuilt, for admin offices now, and the new David Grant is out west of the main gate now.
start it 90 miles farther south so it can go through the ghettoesque east baltimore.
