~~Heroic Safari guide mauled to death by charging lion as he protected his guests in the same Zimbabwean park where Cecil was illegally hunted~~

A Safari guide has been mauled to death and hailed a hero as he tried to protect his group from a charging lion.

Quinn Swales was killed by the big cat in the same Zimbabwean park where Cecil the lion was illegally hunted by an American dentist last month.

The 40-year-old was tracking lions with a tour party during a dawn safari when they were suddenly targeted by the large male.

According to statement from the camp where he worked, the professional guide 'did everything he could to successfully protect his guests and ensure their safety' during the attack.

No one else was hurt in the unexpected incident which took place this morning in Hwange National Park, western Zimbabwe......

......In a recent review Mr Swales was described as being a 'fantastic guide, incredibly knowledgeable and very personable'.

A keen photographer himself, he had a picture of Cecil, the park's most famous lion as his Facebook cover photo....

Sorry but SCI has tried the become more PC as of the last several years.
They knee jerked when they should have backed the hunter. He did nothing wrong. Facts are stubborn things.

how certain are you of the facts?

please relay them

under fair chase or whatever SCI adheres...can you bait to bring the animal from a reserve in one category to another?

I don’t know the answer to that...

I would like to discuss this rationally, b/c I think this is important....extremely important....

I’m glad to hear about SCI and its PC ness, but I do know that they have done a lot of good over the years, as have their local affiliates....

please fill me in on some of those details if you could.

(poor Cecil.....just kidding of course)

but I know that the PH and the hunter were both immediately kicked out of SCI

I think it more likely that SCI wanted desperately to avoid being dragged into a PR nightmare.

I don’t like the idea of killing a lion for sport. Killing for food is perfectly fine.

That would make humans the exception among predators. Animals kill for sport all the time. My guess is this is mainly to sharpen their skills and develop muscle memory. Those that did not probably did not pass on their genes. As to what animals should be targeted for sport, my preference is for large and dangerous predators like lions and bears rather than harmless (in terms of risk to life and limb) species like deer or pheasant.

Where is the video and pics? Since no hunting is allowed, did all the guests take pics and video?

Fairly certain.

I do not believe you are supposed to bait the animal according to their “rules” however from what I understand the dentist did not have anything to do with that part of the hunt. He basically was lead out to the spot to shoot the lion. I do not know whether or not the animal was baited but he was an older animal that was probably on the down hill slide.

Do you have any knowledge of how these type of hunts “work”?
Serious question not sarcasm or condescending at all just curious if you do because I know most people have no idea.

You are correct SCI has done and will continue to do much good. They are the greatest proponents of proper hunting and conservation. There members spend a ton of money to ensure generations to come can hunt as they have.

I assume your “glad” should have been “sad”?

"We can confirm that Quinn did everything he could to successfully protect his guests and ensure their safety"

I must have missed the part where he shot the charging lion in the brain with a .460 Weatherby Magnum. How irresponsible can you be taking tourist who are made of meat into the dining room of meat-eaters. If you want to see a lion up close go to a zoo, if you want to see the inside of a lion go to one of these stupid "preserves". These animals can and will kill you, but I guess that's obvious. Or maybe not.

Wounds like more than one version of the story is bouncing around, but I’d heard a less flattering version on FR. The dentist took out a license for hunting big cats, but not lions. He also went with bow and arrow, and used an arrow that was not intended for lions, and wounded Cecil, who was not put out of his misery until many hours later with a gun.

If so, then yeah, this is not sporting. Let alone legal.

oh, yes, I understand that the PH did the baiting...not the dentist. feel bad for the dentist...and in that regard seems like SCI was not fair?

I can’t say I know for sure...but I did “read on the internet” that Cecil was baited to leave his property and go where he would get shot....

And yeah, if it weren’t for these hunts, lions - and other big game - would probably be endangered! (I do feel like I understand how they work...used to fantasize about going on them....that said...if you want to relay your experience, I’m all ears, b/c I find it very exciting!).
