UW Director of Community Relations Everett Mitchell, speaking at a University of Wisconsin Madison panel dealing with Best Policing Practices, argued that police should stop responding to shoplifting and thefts at Wal-Mart and Target to reduce what he refers to as over policing of the community. Yes, he really believes that enforcing the law regarding property crimes against retailers is over-policing. Mitchell, an employee of an institution that exists to enlighten the young and impressionable, said that communities should be able to decide for themselves what laws should be enforced, and that the ultimate goal of law enforcement is not the actual enforcement of law, but community safety as defined by the community itself. If the community thinks declaring open season on the local Walmartlooting, essentiallyis just fine, then the police shouldnt arrest anyone for it. Theft from big box stores, he explained, is an example of a crime that police and the community may view differently.
How the owner of the stores that get robbed, the employees that will lose jobs when the store leaves to relocate someplace that doesnt think theft is safe, and the families that will have no place to shop might feel about his plan was not discussed. Mitchell, you see, is an irresponsible idiot.
He was also formerly an assistant District Attorney in the Dane County District Attorneys Office. He must have been great at that job.
Mitchell said,
I just dont think that they should be prosecuting cases or bringing up cases for people who steal from Wal-Mart. I just dont think that, right? I dont think Target or all them other places, them big box stores that have insurance. They should be using justification, the fact that people steal from there as justification to start engaging in aggressive police practices, right?

The Left has issued licenses for people who wish to think this way.
No kidding
Obviously he doesn’t own a retail business. ;-)
The men in white coats need to bring Mitchell's straitjacket.
UW Director of Community Relations Everett Mitchell.
So if I go to Everett Mitchell’s garage and take his new John Deere riding lawnmower, that’s okay? He won’t bother the cops with this trivial theft? What’s his address?
Forget the mower, grab his Escalade.
This is a perfect example.
What part of “thou shalt not steal,” doesn’t this guy understand?
“...he explained, is an example of a crime that police and the community may view differently.”
If I lived in this particular “community”, I would be furious over that statement. It implies that anyone living in that community is inherently dishonest and basically okay with stealing. There are people like that in any neighborhood, no question. But most people are honest, decent folk who DON’T think or act that way.
What kind of message is this fool sending to the people of the community, who are trying to raise their kids properly and instill a sense of right and wrong into them?
Said the government drone who has never run a business or feared for his livelihood.
Shoplifters should be thrown out the door face down so their faces are used to stop them from skidding into traffic then thrown in a jail cell!
” I dont think Target or all them other places, them big box stores that have insurance.”
I didn’t even have to look at “them” pictures to know what I needed to know about this clown. How did he ever get a law degree?
Mitchell must have been been in some catatonic state when the Princeton Theological Seminary professor discussed, "Thou shalt not steal."
What you are saying is that he sounds racist? Actually he does! If his attitude was common in a community the businesses would not locate there, or existing businesses would shut down.
