Genetic changes stemming from the trauma suffered by Holocaust survivors are capable of being passed on to their children, the clearest sign yet that one persons life experience can affect subsequent generations.
The conclusion from a research team at New Yorks Mount Sinai hospital led by Rachel Yehuda stems from the genetic study of 32 Jewish men and women who had either been interned in a Nazi concentration camp, witnessed or experienced torture or who had had to hide during the second world war.
They also analysed the genes of their children, who are known to have increased likelihood of stress disorders, and compared the results with Jewish families who were living outside of Europe during the war. The gene changes in the children could only be attributed to Holocaust exposure in the parents, said Yehuda.

I don’t believe its anything to do with a gene change, but I do believe it would impact family decisions and cautious lifestyles for generations.
About two years ago, I posited this theory (more of a quack theory based on growing up with many baby boomers who parents were Holocaust survivors) and I was blistered on FR for daring to suggest that these people were prone to many problems. So thanks for posting.
The race baiter will run with this one.
Stressful events and trauma do change genes. At least per my endocrinologist.
I don’t believe one word of it.
Exactly. Being brought up by parents more subject to stress results in more stress disorders for the children.
I am Jewish and lost many distant relatives in the Holocaust. My wife's uncle (by marriage) was a survivor. All of his kids have, uh, issues - mainly they are very controlling. Probably this is because their father was, and this is a natural reaction to having had NO control over one's life. These effects will last for generations, and will be seen or assumed to be genetic, but are actually behavior in nature.
I can see it now, “Slavery’s Genetic Effects Just Like Holocaust.”
So Lamarck was right after all. I guess there is some science behind the genetic memory in the Frank Herbert “Dune” universe.
You shouldn’t have been attacked - big problems cause other big problems, that is only common sense.
Also, we don’t really know the effects of growing up with no grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. - or a very reduced number. Surely this has some effect on one’s psyche.
BS. It is behavior.
I agree. This would open up a slew of support for reparations etc., regarding slavery, american indians, etc.
And if it is true, then what? The children of genocide victims in Africa, of the children of Christians in the ME, of North Korean children...if it is true, it is what it is and life goes on.
We are not slaves to our genes
“What do you mean by using this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, ‘The fathers eat the sour grapes, But the children’s teeth are set on edge ‘? “As I live,” declares the Lord GOD, “you are surely not going to use this proverb in Israel anymore [Eze 18:2-3]
genetic memory?
I guess its not a new thought. But i am not buying it.
I guess not many people know that some genes turn on and off.

Is this was is meant by the term, ‘’imprinted trauma’’?
“I dont believe its anything to do with a gene change, “
They found epigenetic tag correlation that differed between the two populations.
You would do well to research epigenetics.
Not imposible -
There are gene regulatory molecules in the nucleus of the egg cell. Stress could induce chemical differences in these regulatory compounds.
Test the egg cell composition in stressed vs unstressed people. There could be a difference.

“Exactly. Being brought up by parents more subject to stress results in more stress disorders for the children.”
Did you read the article? Particularly the part about the results of the study and gene tag correlation?
