For all of the talk of spectacle and sideshow surrounding the 143 or so Republican candidates running for President much of it deserved theres even better drama over on the other side. Hidden beneath video footage of helicopter rides and fried butter at the Iowa State Fair is this stark reality: The Democratic party is in deep trouble.
Sure, the GOP has Donald Trump to contend with, for who knows how long, but if he crashes and burns theres a field of credible contenders as big as a Trump golf course, ready to carry on with the serious business of running for President.
Over on the left, however, concerns are mounting that Hillary Clinton the only candidate the Democratic Party and the White House have really invested in is in serious peril. The email scandal she insists is the invention of Republicans with nothing better to do has somehow piqued the interest of President Obamas Justice Department, State Department, his FBI director, and a kooky, paranoid, rightwing upstart called the New York Times.
In a new Fox News poll, Clinton is losing to Republicans Jeb Bush and Sen. Marco Rubio in a general election matchup. Socialist Democrat Sen. Bernie Sanders has also closed in on her lead in recent weeks.
All this, plus the reasonable expectation that Sanders would lose in a general election, has the party scrambling to come up with a Plan B in case Hillarys headaches keep worsening B as in Biden.
I understand the temptation, but Democrats shouldnt get too excited about the idea that Joe will swoop down and save the day.
Florida Democratic strategist Steve Schale, in a seeming dig at Clinton, recently told the website Florida Politics, the vice president understands the challenges of middle class families because for him, that is the only life hes ever had.
Kevin Franck, former communications director for the Massachusetts Democratic Party, told the Boston Herald that if the vice president announced that he was running for president tomorrow . . . he would soon find himself at least comfortably in second place in polls in New Hampshire. A Franklin Pierce University/Boston Herald poll has almost half of likely New Hampshire Democrats saying they want Biden to enter the race.
And in South Carolina, state Rep. James Smith Jr. says hes been talking to Biden and his aides, and promises that as soon as he announces, hell immediately have the most formidable organization in the state.
The enthusiasm, however, is not shared at the White House. President Obama doesnt want to have to pick sides between his current veep and former secretary of state. A Democratic source told CNN, Im not getting any sense of a Joe Biden caucus inside the White House.
On first blush, why not Biden? Hes a sitting vice president with massive name recognition, is beloved among Democrats and, as a vetted entity, has the experience to slip seamlessly into a presidential election.
But on the other hand, how bad must things be for Clinton if Democrats are trying to get a guy who just lost his son to brain cancer to re-enter what will undoubtedly be a brutal and exhausting campaign season? Further, how thin is the Democratic bench that a guy who has twice run for President unsuccessfully, who would be 74 when sworn into the White House, who has zero campaign money and no campaign infrastructure, is your next best hope?
The short term optics of Biden swooping in either to rescue Hillary or to usurp her are pretty terrible for a party insisting it alone owns the womens empowerment mantle. Not to mention, how fresh will Democratic ideas look when the top candidates touting them are 67 (Clinton), 72 (Sanders) and 73 years old?
In the long term, if Hillarys supporters feel shes no longer viable, its likely they divide between Biden and Sanders, leaving the party even more fractured and weakened than before.
Its an unenviable dilemma for Democrats, but one they should have seen coming a mile away. Hillary Clinton not only brings old baggage wherever she goes, she picks up new baggage when she gets there.
Will the mounting pile sink her and the party? Or will Biden attempt an intervention? Its a distinction without a differen
Soviet politburo
Maybe Hillary will get a cold.
Biden is not running. He knows Hillary will be prosecuted and he is telling Warren she has to run for Pres.
I really hope Joe runs. His Gaffe-O-Matic will be running overtime!
The gaffes will be so bad even Dems won’t be able to ignore it.
Whether it’s Biden or Warren, it’s a major admission of Hitlery’s guilt. Her own party knows full well she’s a corrupt disaster.
Biden wants to continue being the town drunk with no responsibility just a title, he and they want pocahantus to run cause shes a devout commie biotch with the same temperment has hildabeast
I question the number on the bench as being thin.
There is no one on the bench for one very sound, inarguable reason. That reason is Hussein Obama, the black Messiah and destroyer of America.
No sane politician thinks he has the ability to overcome the terrible taste in the mouth of most American voters. It is insane to run under such terrible prospects
I do not know if that lying sack of $hit Biden is going to run or not. I did hear someone speculate that the meeting was to recruit Warren as a running mate. The speculation was he promised he would only run for one term, then endorse her.
I suspect this is probably pretty accurate.
Maybe some day some writer will tell the true story of that poor truck driver, that lying sack of $hit Biden has been defaming for over forty years.
Small cupp size is a snarky bitch, that is rooting for Trump's demise, so that the 'professionals' can get on 'with the serious business of running for President'.
I still think Republicans are set up so that when everything’s fallen around our ears (Obama Fail inevitable and happening soon), Dems can point blames at GOP. Case in point, the unending “9/11 happened under Bush watch”....
So, we definitely don’t want another get-along Milquetoast that will set up ‘debates’ for the next 15 years. Well, I’m looking at you, Jeb!
Does this sound like the Obama we know and love? I don't believe it for a minute. Obama has a plan to hang on to his precious legacy. It may or may not be going well but I don't think we know what it is yet. But with Hillary looking like a goner to the NYT then it better be on to Plan B for Obama.
Personally I think we are seeing the start of the execution of Plan B. Contact the Justice Department for further details.
A friend of mine just showed me about a two-minute video of an appearance by Donald Trump on Oprah from 1988; he was saying the exact same things he is saying now about protectionism, about the way the American taxpayer is being ripped off, etc. God help us.
Biden would be a one term ‘Place Holder’, ‘Stand In’, ‘Save My Place In Line’ president. That’s an awful lot to ask even from their loyal members.
With you Tupelo.
It’s amazing to me how the media has refused to discuss Biden’s character smears of Mr Dunn, who died in shame because of Biden. Biden is not only a liar, he’s as nasty as Harry Reid.
I’d be willing to bet the thugs in Obama Inc are demanding that Michelle be veep, no matter WHO wins the nom for President.
“Personally I think we are seeing the start of the execution of Plan B. Contact the Justice Department for further details.”
I believe this is Hill’s last week as a candidate. She has been made an offer to quit “due to deteriorating health reasons”, or will be charged with various crimes by the FBI.
Ball is in her court for the time being.
