The Kentucky Republican Party has approved a presidential caucus allowing Rand Paul to run for president and re-election to his U.S. Senate seat at the same time without running afoul of state law.
State law bans candidates from appearing on the ballot twice in the same election. Paul tried without success to convince the state legislature to change the law. But a presidential caucus allows voters to vote for Paul for president on March 5 and then vote for him again for re-election to his Senate seat during the primary election on May 17.
"This is a chance for someone from Kentucky to be on the national stage to influence the debate and really be in the competition for who our next president is," Paul told a handful of supporters outside of the Capital Plaza Hotel before the meeting began.
But most committee members said their vote was motivated not by Paul's candidacy, but by a desire to make Kentucky a player in presidential politics. That's why Republicans crafted the caucus to appeal to as many of the 17 declared Republican candidates as possible. The plan calls for Kentucky's delegates to be split proportionally rather than "winner takes all," and candidates only need to get 5 percent of the vote to qualify for delegates. That's a threshold much lower than other primary states.

And here's his reward, not that it's going to do him any good, for he will not be the republican nominee, and McConnell will likely betray him now that he's safely reelected, just as Specter betrayed Santorum. These fools never learn!
Ron Paul is a legitimate, but sincere, “nut case” ...
Rand Paul is simply a hanger-on looking for money and power ...
.
How Democratic of them.
On the other hand, I think Paul is best served by staying in the Senate. He has a high conservative rating, but is not ready for prime time yet - nor will he ever be.
Pander sold his soul to McConnell.
Rand the panderer yet again shows why he is not ready nor will he ever be for the white house.
Exactly.
I like Rand, just not as much as others. On some issues I think I like Rand best.
do you like him on Tuesdays or Thursdays, because he’s been all over the place over the last 3 years.
Oh, he has some great days and some brilliant moments...but he’ll turn on a dime.
There are very few, if any, politicians who don’e engage in some form of triangulation.
“Paul could have helped rid us of McConnell...”
___
Yep. And the fact that he didn’t means I’ll be for whoever runs against him in the senate primary. Hopefully, someone will.
Well, there may be very few, but those are the few we should look towards. But I”m not talking about triangulation....I’m talking about trashing conservatives in Berekely to appeal to 400 young liberals who will never vote for a Republican....I’m talking about the total brain dead idea that Thad Cochran’s despicable Mississippi campaign is how you bring black voters to the party, I’m talking about the pandering with the suggestion that the NFL’s Rooney Rule should apply to all business hiring, blaming Republicans more than Democrats on ISIS and Iran - and on and on and on.
SOTC: care the share your devastating Rand Paul links with imp?
Triangulation is not a dirty word. In Canada, Prime Minister Stephen Harper coined the term incrementalism - don’t advocate for what you want to happen but advocate for a step along the way to what you want. He only achieved success politically on the national level when he adopted that approach. Incrementalism is a form of triangulation.
Paul had a lot of potential, but he should have never made that deal with McConnell. He could have won his senate election almost as easily without McConnell’s list of banker and corporate donors, many of whom stabbed Paul in the back anyway. Blind ambition got in the way of what is best for the US, and it is a cost that we are paying for in blood and treasure.
Similarly, Ann Coulter got involved in politics here in KY and worked for McConnell to the hilt, as she worked incessantly to smear our now candidate for governor in his unsuccessful senatorial bid. She has got to be the most polemically seduced and abused/rejected female in the conservative movement, what with Chris Cristie, Jeb Bush, AND Mitch McConnell.
I will vote for Paul if he gets the nomination, but I won’t work for him at the caucuses or send any money. I’d much rather see a real conservative get the nomination.
But that’s not what Rand has been doing. He’s been shamelessly pandering - going down rabbit trails that will not lead to anything good.
Not sure I”m going to look to Canada for guidance either.
GOP rule changes are for sale in Kentucky.
