Police in one Belgian city are now being armed with paintball guns.
Rapid response units in Antwerp are being handed the non-lethal weapons, familiar to stag doers and wannabe warriors across the world.
Police chiefs say that the new semi-automatic firearms are designed to be used in densely-populated areas.
They can also fire pepper spray missiles.
And police bosses hope that they will help neutralise dangerous suspects without actually killing them.
So far, some four FN 303s have been ordered by the city’s fast deployment teams.
The special units, which use unmarked cars to patrol the streets, were created following the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris, France, at the start of the year.
Raids on the satirical magazine and a Parisian supermarket in January left 17 people dead, not including the gunmen.
The killings sparked a worldwide show of solidarity under the banner ‘Je Suis Charlie’.
The Brussels Times reports that the weapons are “unique” to Belgium.

I don’t know where to start...
I’ve been hit by paintballs many dozens of times.
Each one stings for about 5 seconds. But only if you get hit on bare skin. It has ZERO stopping power, unless the honor system is followed, or there is a referee to say “you’re out!”

This article has to be satire. Why not use water guns ? The ammo is much cheaper. In a real crisis situation, one’s own bodily fluids could be an even cheaper and more ‘lethal’ ammo.
They are excellent in riot situations. You can really put the hurt on and back the crowd up. You can target the most obnoxious people individually and bring the pain. Individuals in the mob generally lose interest when the pain is targeted specifically at them.
But they are useless for general day to day law enforcement.
“Hey, you terrorist creeps with those AK-47s, stop or I’ll use my paintball gun on you.” Yeah, that’ll put the fear of God in the Mozzies.
For many generations farmers and orchard owners have used shotguns with rock salt. You aim low. It goes through jeans. It burns like fury. You just want to be somewhere else. Been there done that. Older and wiser.
