Washington (CNN)Since announcing his campaign in late June, Donald Trump has quickly leapt to the top of the Republican field, leading recent polls nationally, in Iowa and in New Hampshire. And now, for the first time in CNN/ORC polling, his gains among the Republican Party have boosted him enough to be competitive in the general election.
The poll finds Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton ahead of Trump by just 6 points, a dramatic tightening since July. Trump is the one of three Republican candidates who have been matched against Clinton multiple times in CNN/ORC polling to significantly whittle the gap between himself and the Democratic frontrunner. He trailed Clinton by 16 points in a July poll, and narrowed that gap by boosting his standing among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (from 67% support in July to 79% now), men (from 46% in July to 53% now) and white voters (from 50% to 55%).
But Clinton still holds the cards overall in the race for the White House, leading four Republican contenders: She tops Trump and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker by 6 points each among registered voters, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush by 9 points, and businesswoman Carly Fiorina by 10 points.

¡Yeb! is unelectable?
As a conservative, I never thought I’d even give a thought to voting for him.
However, as my respect for virtually EVERY branch of government (except the military) has gone to zero, and my respect for the uniparty parallels my respect for the things in the toilet bowl, sorry, but I’d vote for him now.
Says a lot about the country, not?
Sweet. Never thought I’d live to see the day.
It will still take a few more months to dispel the the notion that Trump’s candidacy is a lark and a publicity stunt but people are starting to come around as they begin to realize just how serious Trump is about this whole thing.
Jeb will re-emerge as a border hawk, count on it. He’ll have to.
I couldn’t find the internals of this poll. The Fox poll which breaks down at 42 Dem 38 GOP and 17 Ind has Rubio and Bush beating Hillary and Trump closer than this poll.
It’s amazing what you can get away with when you don’t have a sugar daddy pissing his pants about losing his investment every time you open your mouth.
Walker is doing the same to shake up his campaign. But I don’t think you could cover up the “act of love” illegals BS from Jose jeb
His next 'position paper' is supposedly due out in September. I strongly suspect that will tell the tale. If it has the same kind of impact the first one is having, then it will be Katy bar the door...

Nor the yards of video of Yeb on Telemundo and Univision promising Mexico the world in spanish.
A Faux Poll touting ¡Yeb! as a winner is problematic.
Then we need to throw out Trump's strong showing too right. Fox itself didn't do the poll. Pollsters themselves can stack the deck by the numbers of each party they interview but this poll on the internals looked fairly legit.
Is that the one he is working with Forbes and Laffer on?
Polls at this point are only entertainment and news “story” generators.(
The same, and I expect to be as equally 'game changing". Interesting times ahead...

Any poll listed at RCP has the internals by clicking on that poll.
I agree.
Just an anecdote.
While driving the other day, I saw my first campaign yard sign.
It was for Trump.
In Massachusetts.
I saw Jorge Ramos on with hannity a couple nights ago. HYSTERICAL his lips were on coke. Hannity could not shut him up! I think the IA-SUPPORT news would be fun to watch about now...
