SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah As a lover of ancient rock art, Steve Acerson usually roams Utahs backcountry searching for images of hunters and rams carved on boulders and canyon walls. But one morning, on a hillside speckled with those prehistoric petroglyphs, he was also finding signs of a younger civilization: Shotgun shells. Bullets. Shredded juniper trees. Exploded cans of spray paint.
Its all been shot, he said. Its just destroying everything.
Americas cultural divide over guns has gone into the woods. As growing numbers of hikers and backpackers flood national forests and backcountry trails searching for solitude, they are increasingly clashing with recreational target shooters, out for the weekend to plug rounds into trees, targets and mountainsides.

+10 to your post. That’s SOP for me.
Its all been shot, he said. Its just destroying everything.
It sounds a lot like my neighborhood in Oakland. I don’t know what “Backcountry” has to do with it. Dumb is everywhere!
Take away all the guns and install UN Agenda 21 and no one will be allowed in the back woods either.
Are these areas where BLM or equivalent have shut down designated shooting areas?
It's ALL been shot? It's destroying EVERYthing?
Hyperbole we much?
Funny how these patchouli scented rock huggers don't put sackcloth and ashes on their underarms when a beautiful young woman like Katie Steinle gets murdered by an illegal in broad daylight on a San Francisco pier.
A little perspective too much to aks?
People that go into the deep back country without being armed are simply prey for cougars, bears, wolves and wild pigs.
1) I suspect that Acerson is some sort of urban leftist queer.
2) I suspect that he found one site where some idiot made a mess, and is acting like such messes are the norm.
Agreed. Whether shooting, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, or otherwise, I was raised to leave no trace of my presence in the woods and to take my garbage with me.
You mean like particular districts as portrayed in “The Hunger Games”? No one is allowed outside of their controlled areas to forage in the woods. Well, except for the ruling class who do whatever they want with no recourse from the peons. Oh, wait. That’s just fiction. Right?
Oh! An article about guns from the New York Times!
I bet it will be very balanced, impeccably accurate, and utterly rational!
LOL! Funny you should mention patchouli oil and sack cloth. The end of the month here in the Reno area will host the annual “Burning Man” ‘celebration’(an artistic event?) up in the Black Rock Desert. So the 60 or 70 thousand “burners” will be in town before and after the ‘event’ and let me tell ya, the patchouli oil/marijuana odor lingers for days around town. Oh, and after the ‘event’ you can toss in a bunch of BO as well. :>}
I’m a brass scrounged. If I happened upon a site with lots of brass laying around I’d pick it up.
Second that: Whether shooting, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, or otherwise, I was raised to leave no trace of my presence in the woods and to take my garbage with me.
Dude, your foresight is remarkable. LOL! Just keepin’ up with the enemy and their fair assessment of gun lovin’ rednecks. As if that’s a bad thing.
Spray painting everything in sight in the cities is called “artistic graffiti” by these bozos and they think it should be loved and admired for its “artistic brilliance”. This is just “backcountry” artistic graffiti. This whining hoser needs to stop the whining and learn to deal with it and love it. Pelosi told us that we should all quit our jobs and learn to paint, write poetry or play the guitar. That’s what we did. Deal with it hippies!
LOL! I’ll see if I can get some GPS co-ordinates for you. Of course they may be picked clean by the time you get here.
I see a fair amount of this. It is all about culture. A lot of this problem is from illegals who have no concept of picking up trash.
Why should that worry about it? It is not their country.
Another group is urban “utes”. They do not see anyone else around, so they figure it is ok to trash the place.
I also see a lot of gun culture people regularly haul away truckloads of trash on their own.
It is common for gun clubs to do this.
Well, I got 1 out of 3. I still attempt to play the guitar. About 3 or 4 jam sessions/wk. :>}
“that worry” should be “they worry”
