Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina said Thursday that parents should not be forced to vaccinate their children against diseases like measles or mumps. However, she said she also believes schools should be free to make vaccinations for communicable diseases a requirement for attendance, saying families have to "make that trade-off" for themselves.
Fiorina told reporters after the event that "when you have highly communicable diseases where you have a vaccine that's proven, like measles or mumps, then I think a parent can make that choice."
California, where Fiorina ran for a Senate seat against Democrat Barbara Boxer in 2010, recently passed a law requiring nearly all schoolchildren to be vaccinated. Several calls to tighten the state's vaccine laws erupted after a measles outbreak last December was found to have originated in Disneyland.
Fiorina expressed her disapproval of the mandate, saying that "California is wrong on most everything, honestly."

She isn’t any better than shillary, cut from the same cloth...
I’ve never heard anything so stupid in all my life, well now I take that back, look at what is in the White House, anyway, why we NOT protect our children from these diseases???
She is a total self serving, bubbling idiot!!!!
You may disagree with her position, but I don't think her position on this is unclear.
I'm really torn about this. America is supposed to be a free country. But putting schools aside for a moment, I wouldn't want a child who has never been vaccinated sitting next to my child in, say, a movie theater.
Polio, whooping cough, mumps etc., they're (mostly) gone from the U.S. We should probably work to see that it stays that way.
Umm—If the other kids are vaccinated and mine aren’t, it shouldn’t be a problem.
Vaccination is a preventative measure, right?
I know people who are so pro-vax that, even when confronted with articles about children whose deaths or lifelong disabilities were proven to be directly tied to vaccination shots, they still contend that all children should be forcibly vaccinated.
She’s speaking out of both sides of her mouth. She lacks a fundamental understsnding of personal liberty.
You make a very good point. It's important to remember those days. There are still a few iron lung patients alive today who contracted polio in pre-vaccination times.
Unfortunately, it is human nature for many folks to forget about a lurking danger, once that danger is no longer front and center.
She understands liberty perfectly. You have the freedom not to vaccinate your kids, and schools have the freedom to have vaccination standards. Everyone has freedom here.
This is the classic Prisoner's Dilemma problem. If everyone believed this, then no child would be vaccinated and the risk of the disease spreading would be higher.
Do you mean the part about you shouldn't be forced to vaccinate your children but it's okay for schools to force students to be vaccinated?
Aren't most parents forced to send their children to schools?
I could never understand the vax=anti-vax arguments. Especially with schools.
If it is voluntary, and a child gets sick, I can only surmise that those who have been inoculates are protected and won’t get sick while those who haven’t been inoculated are aren’t protected and may get sick.
The only issue I see here is the government is forcing me to inoculate my child. The only risk of this spreading is to children who have chosen not to be inoculated.
Ask your doctor or other health professionals you know if their children are (or were) vaccinated. I predict that everyone of them will answer affirmatively.
UmmIf the other kids are vaccinated and mine arent, it shouldnt be a problem.

In the broadest sense, you are correct.
Seemingly the ONLY ones not vaccinated are those whose parents chose not to do so.
BUT you should be given a choice - No shot - you must buy insurance to cover your kid in case one of the other non shots infect your kid or vice versa. NO GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE, Make shot free, Make premium ‘high’.
In the same token what about the kids that live in your project or play with your kids? Supposedly the shot makes them immune (yea right)SO,
back to my line 2...
if the ‘best laid plans’ are correct, the only ones in ‘trouble’ are the cluster that doesn’t get shots.
See my post #25.
Not entirely correct. A vaccination greatly reduces one's chances of getting a disease, but nothing is 100% effective.
So in your scenario, your unvaccinated child runs a risk of getting a disease. Then there is a very, very small chance that your child could pass that disease on to a vaccinated child.
But there's more to it than that. When many unvaccinated kids are in the picture, there is obviously a greater chance that the disease will spread among those kids. And that in turn will increase the risk to the vaccinated kids: The many very, very small chances will add up!
I’m not. There shouldn’t be any piblic schools.
How can any conservative be for a government forcing risky medical treatment on people? Forcing certain products on people? Forcing the ingestion of concoctions?
One of those enigmas, I agree.
